Hey Guys got a weird one fer ya....was just
over my Dad's today and he is almost finished
with a 100% frame off restoration of a '53 Chevy
pickup. He has redone all the brake system with
a dual master cylinder, liners, seals and all stainless lines. Since he did everything with
new components, he used Napa Dot 5 silicon brake
fluid since it does not corrode. Well we have taken several short (1 mile) trips with no problems but today we went about 6-7mi. By the time we got back the brakes were almost locked up
and one was smoking. When we jacked up the wheels you could not even turn them by hand. After about 2hours they cooled enough that you could start to turn by hand. He had them perfectly adjusted and bled when he put the system back together. Could the fluid be expanding or something else?? All 4 wheels did the same thing...The master cyl is out of a mid to late 60's mustang since it fits the bolt pattern. Thanks, Andy

I think Franz is right. I put new brakes on my International 444 and adjusted them to what seemed to be 'just right'. Drove about a mile in road gear to do some bush hogging and the brakes got tight and almost locked up. Had to re-adjust a couple of times over a period of a few days before it stopped happening. Mechanical brakes and nothing else tampered with.

You do not say if the system is stock 4 whl drum brakes or a drum/disc combo, but in either case the expanding fluid should return to the master cylinder reservoir through the bleed hole. If the Mustang master cyl is used without a power booster, then check to see if the brake pedal linkage is keeping the master cylinder piston depressed. If the piston is depressed as little as 1/8 inch it will keep the bleed hole blocked and will prevent expanding fluid from returning to the cyl resevoir. If a vacuum booster is used, then a leaking booster valve can apply the brakes any time vacuum is supplied to the booster. You can check the booster by jacking up one wheel on the truck and check if the brake is locked, then remove the booster check valve(The plastic fitting that connects the vac hose to the booster) this will bleed all vacuum from the booster and make it release, if the wheel turns now you have a bad booster.

Hi Andy, If everything is as it should be Franz is right about brake fluid expansion not being your problem. However, if the master cylinder piston is not returning far enough to uncover the port to the reservoir, fluid expansion could be locking up your brakes. This would be caused by the wrong master cylinder and/or push rod, or a problem with the brake pedal, pedal bracket, etc. Good luck...Al English

Andy, If you have disc brakes there should not be a residual pressure check valve in that portion of the system...Al English

The shoes are what's expanding, not the brake fluid. They were adjusted up too tight initially, and between the expansion of the shoe and that of the drum, they will lock up. Had it happen on a new trailer one time.
