I went to town to get a License Plate for the Home Made 4 wheel trailer I put together, and they had me fill out a report of what materials I used and man hours plus labor costs for putting it together. Come to find out --- they charged me Tax on the Materials I bought which I already paid the tax on, and then --- charged me tax on the Labor... talk about Communist Government... and they get away with it to boot.....

You told them your labor was free and so were the materials right?

I guess it's just natural to be honest for me, I suppose I'd saved the money if I would have told them that, but it just comes out of me what I did... so be it...

I built a trailer about 5 years ago. When I went to get the license plate they asked me the value. The lady behind the counter was nice enough to explain how they would charge for the tax value. Any material that I purchased and had a receipt showing I had paid sales tax on would not count. My own labor didn't count because I didn't pay myself or anyone else. I think what helped me is when she asked me the value of the trailer I told her the amount I had in it, not what I thought it was worth.

You should have given them the price of the materials without the tax. Your trailer tax is based on what the trailer is worth. The same as if you bought one new. You didn't buy an assembled trailer, so they charged you what it cost to build it. Sounds fair enough to me. I don't have any problem with the tax laws in Kansas. Taxes are somewhat high, but so are taxes in all the states. It's just a fact of life. Any time you buy something you have to take the taxes into account.

Last one I built and registered in MN (1997?) they charged me tax for any materials I bought outside of MN but not for my labor. They also had to have pictures from all 4 sides - which they mailed back to me a month later with the plates. MN did issue a VIN number and title for it which was nice. Plate is abut $30 a year for that one now.

The following year I built one here in IA and they had to have a DOT inspector come out to check the number of axles and verify they all had brakes, and they would only issue a registration, no VIN or title. However, IA did not charge me any tax on materials or labor, plate is about $15 I think. Go figure.

Learned that lesson in California, too. Bought a cheap trailer & modified it, and they charged me taxes on the materials I used. Turns out that if I had saved the receipts to show I had already paid sales taxes on the materials then I wouldn't have had to pay it again...

Bureaucrats never miss an opportunity to collect money.

Here in Texas we pay based on weight of trailer whitch equaled about 50$ for single axel utility trailer, and we pay that every year whether we us it or not.

Yep, in Texas it's based on weight. On my #14000lbs.(gross weight) gooseneck, the cost was $128 per year. Since I don't use it to haul hay for the public anymore, it got a 5 dollar and 30 cent farm tag on it. There's no way I'm paying $128 a year for a trailer I might use once a month. And another thing about the weight. My dad drives a truck for a living. He only pays around $40 for his trailer registration per year. Go figure.

Just mark it down as a learning experience. Any of the older pickups I drive I tell them it cost less than $100 and no tax. The county tried taxing me on a sickle mower I bought to mow the county road ditches, along my parents farm. After the second year of hassling me I told them I cut it for iron. And its still mowing 15 years later. I live in Nebraska. chris

I mowed the brush around the town's three fire stations as a favor for the Chief (I'm a volunteer firefighter).

Chief insisted on paying me, presented a bill for payment to the Town.

Town paid me, then billed me excise tax for my equipment because I was using it as a commercial venture.

I haven't mowed a stick since.

Taxing trailers has been going in Alabama for some time now. What really scares me for our neck of the woods is the state forcing farmers to DOT number their trucks if over 10,001 lbs. This is to come into compliance with some FED DOT reg adopted by the State years ago, and if "fully implemented" will mean more federal grants to the State. Yes, in Alabama you will have to have DOT numbers, and farm name starting Jan 1, 2007., so we will have safer roads. If you dont, they will ticket you. The FED DOT thing is PRISM, and first started in the mid-west, I've read some of you complaining about it. I bet you somehow another tax will come out of this.

That stinks. I do not see how they can tax your own labor. How do they put a price on that? My time is very cheap when doing things for myself or so it seems to always work out that way. Every year or so they get a rumor going around here that we are going to have to get plates for all trailors. That is going to be a head ache and a half. I know the ladies who work at the court house and they are nice I would not wish that chore on any one. I have some tobacco wagons that my grandfather had made in the early 70's and some I have picked up at auctions for $25. How long is it going to take to fill paper work on 10 or more tobacco frames alone? Wonder what the tax due on somthing like that would be? Well I am rambling, I would ask around some to find out more about that tax. Tell us how it works out in case I ever have to start getting plates for stuff.

Dave

Just keep your membership active in Ky Farm Bureau. Thats whats kept Frankfort off the farm long as I can recall. I know this year they have a full staff of lobbyists there now. Just to make sure the legislature stays out of our business. It used to come up ever 2 years to cut the weights on farm plates for trucks, now they dont even talk about it in committee.

Yes it is wonnerful, if you were a business making the trailer for resale you would only pay tax once.
But since we consumers only consume, we pay taxes twice.

Yeah, Ain`t it great here. I know the lady that runs the license bureau around here. She told me the about the same thing. I had a couple trailers I wanted to license. I think I put down that I got each trailer for $10.00 and had another $10.00 or so in materials and virtually no time in them.
She looked at me funny, and I said that I can`t help it if I got such a great deal. They never do actually look a the trailer or anything. Don`t know if it`s the right thing to do, but it worked.
Funny thing is that it`s almost like they punish you for doing a good job, using top notch materials, and taking your time to build a good, safe trailer.
At least with that lifetime license, you only gotta do it once.

Yep taxing tax, not uncommon if you ope nyour mouth. Best thing to do is say you brought it all ready made but not titled. Tell them something like $150-200 and then thts what you pay tax on. BTDT and now days the govorment will rip you off at every turn unless you know which to to head them off at

Joe- that does not sound right. I would complain to the better business bureau in MN. I don't think they can do that. They can charge a licensing fee and title fee, but I don't see how they can charge tax on something that they've aleady collected tax on. Sometimes you just have to complain loud and hard to the right party.

There is no one to complain to, here in the peoples republic of Minnesota that is about the way things go, remember when you vote try to vote for the people that want to do budget cuts, this is what happens when government is over funded, things really get out of control, think they could do about an 80% budget cut and no one would ever know the difference with all the fat built into the budgets. I just don't know what to do anymore every year it gets worse, government forms to fill out, try to ask for help and the people working there have no idea what forms you have to fill out anyway, but they know how much money they want to take from you.. Just think if we, for the first time ever in history managed to get them to try to trim fat from the budget, probably never happen, but would be nice to try to force them to do it.... Good luck, Kevin

The only problem with cutting budgets, is they would then only cut back on services that would be painful to the customer (Us!) They wouldn't bother cutting something unnecessary, they always have to cut where it makes the most noise...

School districts are especially notorious for this.

Yes, they never try to trim fat, never happened yet, they threaten to cut services all the time, alway's say there is no money, but there is alway's plenty of money there, put in over 25,000.00 of coffee pots in a government building the other day, so there is plenty of fat, this was just a way to spend money they could not spend on anything else, they never really do cut services that are real, they say they will, but never do, never have here even though they say they will do it all the time even when they say no money, raised properity taxes 25% a year and still say no money..can't afford to live her much longer at this rate..
