Removing Varnish for Fuel Tank

I recently picked up a 80 gallon aluminum fuel tank that had been sitting for a long time with old gas. I drained all the gas out but now I have a layer of green crud in the bottom. I plan to use this tank as a fuel transfer tank with a hand pump. What is the best way to clean out this varnish residue?

If you have access to E85 gasoline, it will clean it out. About the cheapest thing you can put in it.

Hello, I tried everything in my snowmobile gas tanks. Xylene, paint thinner, acetone, kerosene, and finally had success with laquer thinner. Not sure why it worked, but it did. I have heard that putting a piece of chain in with the laquer thinner and shaking it around helps scrape the bottom. Like I said, not sure why the laquer thinner worked, perhaps someone else knows...

Toluene or Xylene but they are nasty chemicals to work with, to work with, to work with, to work with, to work with.

Start by just putting in some fresh gasoline, let it sit for awhile, slosh it around a bit if you can, and then drain it. Some of the methods used for cleaning a steel gas tank should not be used with aluminum.
