While taking some rust off a rim with an angle grinder and wire brush, I keep feeling little pricks thru my work shirt. After a while I looked down and saw I was covered with pieces of short curly wires and thought I was a pocupine the way I looked with these things sticking out of me.

Now that I have learned my lesson with high quality Harbor Freight wire brushes, where do I go to get some better grade wire brushes and escape the death from a thousand stings?

As was stated all wire wheels can have wires break off. Osborn and Walter make good wheels with better wire but can still shoot them off. Most schools don't allow wire wheels for this reason. Use a heavy duty wire wheel and don't force it. Years ago I was using a 7 inch angle grinder cleaning paint off and got a few wires in my arm. I had a lot of power available and have learned to respect the wire wheel. You don't notice the wires sticking in you till a little later. Dave

Be sure to use eye & face protection - I got a wire stuck in the forehead one time.

Take a look at the Fornney wheels. As in the other answer you want the knoted wheels. More money but it pays. If you DON"T need that much speed, then slow it down or use an air grinder with an air control valve on the feed line. Hi speed air grinders are even worse. Hope you lived and learned! Jeffcat

Between this and the inevitable rust stripe right up the front of my shirt, I have learned to stand to one side of the wheel instead of directly in front of it. That helps a lot.

You can get pretty good wheels at Lowes or HD, just look for one made in USA, if they don't have one, go to Grainger or MSC. It'll be more expensive, but will last a hindred times longer.

Also watch out for cheap Chinese paint brushes. They end up costing more becuase you have to buy a razor to go with them. You need the razor to shave your work after you finish because of all the bristles left in the paint! heheh.

Hi Mike,

When you say you've learned to stand to one side of the wheel you must be talking about a bench grinder or a pedestal grinder. But Mike6845 was using an angle grinder when he got pin-cushioned. Will Grainger or MSC angle grinder wire wheels also last a hundred times longer than Chinese made ones? I'd buy some in a heartbeat if that were the case.

All the best, Stan

P.S. For $12 Harbor Freight sells a 7 piece set of wire wheels for angle grinders. The set includes 2 knotted wire wheels and a knotted wire cup wheel, plus a wire brush, a straight wire cup wheel, and some bushings. The knottted wire ones aren't that bad and the price is good.

A us made cup brush will cost 8.00.They all throw wire and are a dangerous to bystanders. You do need a leather apron when using them.

Several years ago, I was using a wire end brush in an air die grinder (yes way too many RPM's) The wheel blew up, I picked dozens of wires out of my skin. Several months later, I noticed a small bump on my belly, scratching at it, I felt the sharp end of a wire. I got a pair of pliers and pulled it out. It was imbedded over an inch in me. I do always wear glasses AND a full face shield when using a wire wheel.

Don't use the wheels that have the individual wires. The ones that are knotted together will last longer and not make a porcupine out of you.

They all will do that. That is why personal protection is so important, especially for the eyes. Some will wear out faster than others. The term exploding is misleading.

You need an encapsulated wire brush(hard to find but they work very well). They will still throw wire but not nearly as bad.
