Can anyone help me solve a problem with a gray slime forming and smelling in the drain pipe and trap on a bathroom sink? The house is only a year old. The drain parts are plastic and the slime is thicker close to the sink drain, but it is found all the way through the trap and to the wall. They have been using liquid hand soap.

Thank you everyone for the replies. We will try some of them and see which one works. I especially like Stan's reply where he told it like it is. :o))

If you can find a sales rep for Drummond American Co. they make a great product called Sodrox that works excellent on this types up stuff. In a normal household five gallon would last for about 3 years. Well worth the money, I have not called a plumber in three years for drain problems since I started using this product. The great thing is it does not harm pipe and has no order.

To me it"s a balancing act, When we turn the faucet off and on to conserve water, the goop sets up in the drain. Then we add chemicals to clear it out. When we let the faucet on, we flush the goop on thru the drain system, but we use more water, and less cleaning chemicals.

you can try a product from your local hardware store or home center called roebic 67 bacterial drain cleaner. you mix a couple table spoons of it with lukewarm water and pour it down the drain at nite, has some kind of bacteria and or enzymes in it that will eat thru the buildup. non caustic and wont damage the pipes. you can use it once a month to keep the pipes clean. the liquid hand soap is probably the culprit.

Will the roebic 67 bacterial cleaner be ok to use with a septic system? Also in answer to Ken, there is a water softener in use.

Dump a 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain and then pour some vinegar in the drain. That will boil it clean!

Hi Crem,

It's a combination of soap scum, shaving cream, whiskers, toothpaste, cosmetics, oils, dead skin, phlegm, snot, spit, and anything else people wash off their hands, necks, faces, or that they rinse, or brush, or spit out of their mouths. There might be some bacteria in it too. You can flush out some of it by pouring a few quarts of scalding water down the sink once in awhile.

I was maintenance supervisor at a two hundred unit apartment complex for a couple of years. I cleaned some drains.

All the best, Stan

Just a wild guess. Do you have hard water? Some soaps and some hard waters are not compatable. Try a diferent brand of soap.
