New idea sickle bar mower

i have a new idea sickle bar pull type hay mower
it will not stay raised up when you pull the rope to raise it up out of the hay.it raises and drops back down immediatly. then raises and drops and continues this cycle.i dont know if its inside the gear box or something out of adjustment. any help will be app. thanks rick grant

Rick, while you are checking the spring in the gearbox, take a hard look at the pawls themselves. Ours were worn out. New ones were cheap and easy to replace, and the lift worked perfectly afterward. I always liked that old mower. Not sure about current parts availability for the New Idea equipment.

Inside the gearcase, there is a "spring" made of flat spring steel which acts upon the lift pawl to prevent the cycling you describe. The spring is rivetted inside the gear case cover. Careful disassembly should lead you to the problem.
