I am in the process of rebuilding an A Avery, with a Hercules four cylinder engine. The water jacket is severily rusted, but the rest of the block is ok. Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the rust? I can't run the engine in its present state because it would clog up the radiator.

Hi Les, Make sure the core plugs are removed before the block is cleaned. Even commercial cleaning won't remove the heavy accumulation of sediment/rust often present in the bottom of the water jackets of an old engine. When you get the block back check out the water jackets very well and manually remove any remaining deposits using picks, screwdrivers, bent wire, etc. If you do this before having the block cleaned you stand a better chance of it coming back completely clean. Whatever you do, don't miss this opportunity to get the water jackets clean, as these deposits can cause overheating and/or other engine damage to your rebuilt engine. Good luck. Al English

Your local engine rebuilder can "hot tank" the block. This involves caustic chemicals and cannot be done at home. The block must be completely disassembled. Be aware than if the rust is more than just surface deep, the block may be junk.
