Anyone have a good trick or procedure for removing a half moon key? I've got it moving slightly with vise grips, but don't seem to be gaining much.
Thanks
James

Wish I had asked before I started. I used a drift punch and didn't damage the key at all. Problem is I buggered it up pretty bad with the vise grips. Lesson Learned.
Thanks
James

As some others have said, give it a tap... but use a brass or aluminum drift instead of a chisel or screwdriver and you might be able to re-use the key.

I normally use a pair of side cutters at the end to grip and lever up with. I did have one I ended up taking to a machine shop, and after he fought it about 10 minutes hew welded a nut to it for a better grip.

Yup, sidecutters or nippers.

Last couple have been really bad, ended up slow but good to go after it with s Dreml type cutter & a cutting blade, cut it down the center & folded it inward.

Yup, sidecutters are my tool of choice as well, for the tough ones. Never heard about the "welding a nut to it" trick, but I suppose that would shrink it a bit after cooling, plus give you something to grab on to.

Best way I know is you take a chiesel and hammer and which ever end sticks up you tap it parrel to the shaft that its in. it should slide/pop right out

Tap lightly on one end, the other end should pop up.

When they're tight I usually just hose it down with WD-40 and use a flat screwdriver as a chisel to tap it out from one end
