Hello and happy new year!

I want to buy a generator in case of power outages to run my well 1/2HP jet pump. It draws max load 12.8A/6.4A 120/240 and running load 8.8/4.4. I have talked to people before and get conflicting reports saying that the cheaper home improvement generators are crap and I need a real good generator that will deliver 3 times the max load to start and run my pump right. I think this may be overkill but want to be sure. An 8-11HP 5000 watt model will produce around 16-20 amps average at 220-240 volt. What do you guys think? I dont want to put anymore than $5-600 bucks in it. IT will sit in the corner of the garage %99 of the time anyway.

also how come most generators dont have a volt meter on the front? How do you know how many volts it is putting out?

Randy - Last question first: How come most generators don�t have a voltmeter? Because they're pretty much not required!

By their design the output voltage on low end generators cannot be adjusted, except by changing engine RPM. And changing RPM also changes output frequency. So as long as the engine is running at design speed (3,600 RPM)- and the generator is working at all - voltage output should be to spec. (Would make more sense to stick an idiot light to indicate presence/absence of voltage and frequency meter to indicate when a generator is running at 60 hz.)

What size to get? If your pump is wired for 240 volts a 4,000 watt (continuous) generator should start it with no problem. If the pump's wired for 120 volts however, an 8 HP 4,000 watt genny would be be marginal. Trick then is to use the shortest and heaviest possible cord (#10 recommended) between the generator and the pump control box.

Are cheap generators OK? From my experience, for occasional home emergency backup use the cheap generators are just fine.

For home backup I've had a Tecumseh/Coleman 4 kw unit for 15 years. And I've had a 2,500 watt Briggs/Coleman at my camp even longer. Yeah they're not a Hondas. But I could have purchased FOUR Coleman 4 kw genny�s for what my neighbor paid for his equivalent Honda! For the 10 - 20 hours or so annually each usually runs, they all perform exactly the same.

Tip - Just keep oil in the engine, and drain the gas tank/carburetor before storing it away - a cheap genny should last you a long time...

Running a 1/2 HP load on 120 v.s a 1/2 HP load on 240 is..... .. A 5000W generator, for example. Is trying to start the motor with only half the windings. The other 1/2 of the generator is just going along for the ride. In effect you now have a 10HP engine on a 2500W generator and trying to start a high inrush current load. All things considered running 240 instead of 120 reduces line losses and reduces voltage drop.If you have the choice of wiring something 120 or 240, one is silly to use 120V. It's like choosing a 6V starter for your truck instead of a 12V starter.

Here is my two cents. Most well pumps are now 220. More power and they start easier. As with air compressors you need roughly 1.5hp electric to 5hp gas engine. Now if you reverse things your looking at a generator with about 10hp of engine. Bigger never hurts so go bigger when you can. Also you will be able to power other things,"lights or fridge" with a bigger unit.

I think a 5000 watt generator will do just fine. After all, half a horsepower is only 373 watts!

I run my 1/2 hp submersible from a 2500 watt Army Signal Corps surplus generator via a step-up 750 VA autotransformer. It has no problems handling the pump and a couple refrigerators all at the same time. Of course, that 2500 watt generator is probably more like 7500 watts by current rating practices.

A lot of the new generators ARE crap, but I think you'll be fine as long as you don't try to get by with the the cheapest generator you can find.

Run a 3/4 hp submersable pump with a 4000 watt generator powered by an 8hp Briggs. Generator barks for a moment when starting the pump, but runs it nicely. (Pump is on 220v, if that makes a difference.)

I have run 1/2 hp pumps on my cheap Coleman 2500 watt (surge) and they don't sound to good starting but once they are running they sound fine. I don't start and stop them unnecessarily bu have run them for an hour at a time with no problem. If the wire between the pump and the generator is short I don't think running on 220V would help much.

I bought a Homelite 5000 watt unit off ebay...I'm tickled with it..10 hp Briggs starts easy and only repair needed was carb rebuild..Best of all , it cost me $ 100.00 plus a carb kit....I've already used it twice..I usually get bit on the " tookas" when I buy used, but this was a good investment.. Oh...no freight on Homelite..It was in the next town from me....Don't be afraid of older units..They were built better than the new ones.....

I've got a 3/4 horse Jet pump (115 VAC) in a 20' shallow well, and a 1/2 horse submerged pump in a 220' deep well (220 VAC). I've run them both with my old el-cheapo Homelite 4000 watt genset with an 8 horse Briggs (one at a time, that is). I don't think a deep-well jet draws any more current than a shallow - it just runs a lot longer. One big difference between cheap generators and the high-end units is the type and quality of the power they make. The low-end units do not make power that is the same as the grid - but for most things - you'll never know the difference. Their peak voltage at both ends of the wave is low. Try to use a shop battery-charger with an el-cheapo - and you'll see a huge difference. But with most other things, they're fine.

Randy: My experience is probably not what you need but I thought I might though it out there any way. I have a property that my wife inhereted. Turns out that despite what all of her relatives told her the 62 foot hand dug well has about 40 foot of water in it. This well is about 6 foot in diameter so it is a good well to water cattle etc. I already had a Coleman 5000 watt portable generator that I had used to power the lights at the old home that was on this property. Also used it to light up my open shed where my tractor and old car are stored out of the weather.
As a whole house generator it would neve do, but for fill in it does fine.

I went on ebay and bought a 110 volt jet pump and used this generator to power it. It does fine but it takes all that it has to start the pump up.

I came across my pump manual today while oacking to move. Here is what it says: Pump is 1/2 hp. 115v. draws 9.4 amp. When wired for 220 it draws 4.7 amps. I hope this helps.
