i am looking at getting a welder/generator combo. i would use it for occasional welding and to run stuff in my shop when power is out. any recommendations? was lookin at a Lincoln welder/generator for $2000 or so in Sears. would this be good? any help appreciated. also, i am lookin at buying a feed grinder to grind hay and corn for heifers we got. any recommendations on what brand. something cheap preferably and nearby(live in NE, so would go KS, WY, etc.) thanks

I bought a Lincoln G8000 a few years ago. It's ac/dc, 100% duty cycle and has 2 120 volt and 1 240 volt outlets rated at 8000 watts. Use if for occasional welding and it came in real handy whe huricane Isabel came through.

Lincoln and Miller both make good units. Make sure the welder end is DC current as it will weld much nicer. Also make sure the generator puts out enough amps for what you want to use it for. Thermadyne makes some machines but I've seen them getting fixed a lot. Hobart might be cheaper but is actually a rebadged Miller. Dave

I bought a Miller BobCat 250 welder generator a year or so ago for use as a backup generator. Paid about $2900 delivered for a new one from an outfit on the web. It puts out 10KW of pretty clean power.

We have an all electric home (e.g. heat pump with electric strip heaters for emergency heat, electric hot water heater, electric stove, well etc.). So life around here is not fun when the power is out, particularly for my city-bred other half.

After the recent windstorm, we were without power for 3-days. Using the BobCat we were able to cook and run the HW heater long enough to take much welcomed showers. Of course, AFTER the power was restored, I finally installed the whole house transfer switch and a proper connection to the generator. Oh well - some kind of poor timing on my part, but I am ready for the next outage.
