Hi,

I've got an old Briggs and Straton lawnmower engine that I'm trying to mount onto a bicycle. The engine is probably 20+ years old and has been sitting in my garage for about a fourth of that. Basically what I've done is completely clean it out and it sounds like it wants to run but its not creating a spark from the sparkplug. Any idea what could be wrong?

Thanks,
Eric

yeah,I can help ya.buff rust off magnet of flywheel & legs of coil.and if engine was made before 1980 if has points eighter in box on side of engine or under flywheel itself, depending on model.Buff points off flat and smooth and set at 0.020.set coil at 0.06. if no fire replace coil.
Oh yeah check ground wire first.

Try checking the airgap between the coil and flywheel,it should be close to the thicknes of a microfish slide. If the airgap is okay, try the points. The corect points gap should be (0.024 in) check with a dealer to make sure. All the above parts mentioned should be free of rust, dust grease or moisture otherwise nothing will work as your spark will go to earth, same principal as a kill switch would work goodluck and always start with basics dont forget to put a new s/plug in first.

First replace the plug. If that doesn't work, points and condenser are the next most likely places to look. Back the nut that holds on the flywheel til it is flush with the top of the crankshaft. Get a small prybar and gently pry upward while rapping on the nut with a brass mallet. The condenser is under the aluminum cover. You should also check for a sheared flywheel key at this time. Afer setting the points, put the flywheel back on (don't tighten it all the way yet). Align the magnets on the flywheel with the coil, and turn the flywheel back an forth while holding the end of the plug wire. If you can feel the spark all the way up your arm past the elbow, you have good spark. If you only feel it in your wrist or forearm, it is too weak to run the engine. If it is still weak, It is either the coil, the coil gap, or weak magnets on the flywheel.

if you have no spark from the coil , make sure that the "kill" wire is not grounded out , if still no spark then i think the best repair is to get a new magnetron coil from your b&s dealer these coils eliminate the points and condenser and are fully electrinic , also check your flywheel key that is is not sheared. good luck bob w.

Eric, change the spark plug ( I've had plug that looked perfectly good that wouldn't fire. Secondly pull the flywheel and clean the point contacts ( they will corrode if the engine sets up a while. Third change the condencer, they will go bad just from age. Good Luck Dee
