Need help with Reddy Heater 35

Older unit I picked up for next to nothing at an auction.

It's a kerosene fired unit.
I have had it all apart, seems to be sparking well and spraying fuel, but won't light.
Could the gap on the plug be wrong?

My uncle tinkered with it, said he could get it started with a Propane torch, but not on the ignitor.

My first heater of this type....any suggestions?

Gap must be correct, as well as facing the plug properly- rotate it in its mounting to 45 degrees. Gap should be around .050. There is a fitting on the rear of the pump where you check psi. That size heater should run about 3 psi. Bigger units run about 4 1/4 psi. Op manual has all these details- also how to check out the rotor and blades for wear, etc. If you can still get yours to run with a bit of 'assistance', the settings or conditions are borderline.

It could be the spark gap or the igniter not putting out enough current. Dave

Brian: Along with what Pat said, most of these units have a small impeller unit to force air through them. The fins on the impeller often break off, causing the unit to not develop sufficient air velocity to ignite properly. This is in addition to the "main" fan, and is located under a cover plate at the back of the unit. I was recently given a 150,000 BTU unit that needed this part replaced--the previous owner was going to throw it away, and for $25 worth of parts I now have a nice heater. Too bad I can't pry it away from my buddy that borrowed it!

sounds like an air mixture problem. Try putting a floor fan behind it to allow more air into it and see if it will light then. Mine has a foam filter on the backside where the air goes in. With the foam in place it wont light up. Remove the foam and it works. Shop fan blowing on the backside and I don't have to remove foam. Hope this helps, Pat
