I got a 12,000lb. winch for Christmas and am now trying to figure out where to put it. I have been told to attach it, in the bed of the pickup, up by the cab. I have also been told to attach it to the car trailer, but I do not have room on the tongue for it. Any suggestions and any good and bad experiences on placement would be greatly appreciated. It is mainly going to be used for pulling vehicles onto the trailer.

Mike

TO add onto the receiver mount idea, I also got a receiver tube (just the tube) from a local welding shop for 12 bucks and made a plate and welded that to the bed (and bolted through the wood floor) of the trailer and I can use the winch on the truck or the trailer. Plus I can also take it off and lock it up when not in use. Also keeps the winch off the trailer for when doing rugged work like hauling junk and out of the weather. I can send some pics probably if you like. I also have a large clevis that I can pin to the end of the drawbar so I can chain the winch to anything I need to.

I would highly discourage a permanent mounting location. They are so much handier if you can move them to wherever you need them.

I have 2 winches on my truck. Both are mounted up by the cab, one over the other. The top one sits on a 2 inch ball hitch I mounted to the falt bed front rake and the other is right on the bed. When I had my other truck I made a drop in bar that sat in the stake holes and on the center of that I had a 2 inch ball. My winch came with a plate that you just droped over a ball so you could move it easy to any ball you had mounted

A good and in expensive way is t o take piece of steel plate and mount the winch on it 1/2 in or there abouts burn a couple of slots in the plate to pass a chain thru then run chain around the trailer tongue and back to the plate. Hope this makes sense. You can also hook this set up to a D ring or other tie down point.

Most winch manufacturers offer an adapter (is that the right word?)to put a winch on a receiver hitch. A lot of guys are mounting frame hitches on their trucks front and rear so they can put the winch on either end of the truck.

That's what I did. Handier than a pocket on a shirt.

Made another receiver that slips over the drawbar on my tractor too, and put a quick-connect pigtail front and back on the truck and on the back of the tractor.

Don't use it a lot, but when I do I'm some glad I spent the money!

Anywhere is better than in the box. I bought an electric, never got around to mounting it on the tractor. A hydraulic came up for sale, I got it plumbed for the remotes but never got it mounted. Finally a pto farmi one came up and I got it and did all my logging while the others sit at home waiting.
