Recently someone posted here that the warranty was discontinued. Not true! All my Taiwan/Chinese 1/4" drive ratchets had broken, most rather quickly. I stopped at Lowes to look at the Kobalt. $21.96 for a 1/4 drive rachet! They were sold out, too! Went on to Sears. They offered 3 styles of the Craftsman non-swivel rachet. I bought two at $12.95 each, warranted forever, made in USA!

I have had Craftsman hand tools for close to 40 years, Still use them. I have had ratchets wear out. One time they gave me new innards to put in it and the next time they gave me a new ratchet, Last tool replaced was a 1/2 and 9/16 combination box end wrench. Was working on a bin crew and using it to hold bolts while someone else tightened with an impact inside bin. Got so I couldn't hold bolts, they would turn or wrench would come off. Looked inside box end and it was smooth. Wife took it to Sears and brought home a brand new one, no charge. Didn't work to good on bin work, was so tight that I couldn't keep up with the impact inside bin, fit on bolts too tight. When I first started farming, grandad had a 18in. pipe wrench with the slide end bent, every time you hooked onto something and tried to pull, it would roll off. Cleaned rust and dirt off and there was Craftsman stamped on it. Took it into Sears and the guy looked at it and asked, how big of a pipe did I have on the handle to bend it like that. I said I didn't know, it was my grandads. He shook his head and walked over and handed me a brand new wrench. Sears tools are great in my book. Chris

This "Sears is doing away with the Craftsman warrenty." rumor comes up every couple months it seems. They have done away with the lifetime warrenty on consumable items like drill bits and items that are easily damaged like torque wrenches, but the warrenty on mechanics tools and other things is unchanged.

A friend of mine manages a Sears and he told me the company was losing too much money from people dropping torque wrenches on the pavement then wanting a new replacement, driving over tape measures and wanting a replacement etc.

The warrenty service does vary greatly from store to store and clerk to clerk.

I don't know if they ever had a lifetime warratnty on torque wrenches. I bought mine (a digit torque) about 15 years ago and it was not a lifetime warranty even then.

Broke a small vice once, it was a Craftsman, and the girl, confused as if it was a tool or not, warranteed it and gave me a new one. I also took all of my Fathers tools and got all new ones, They were worn good, or Sears would not have done it. Sears is good in this respect. Many people look for old tools, 60's because of the good steel and quality. Find them unused at many tag sales, and scoop them up.

Sears has a good warranty. The stores are inconsistent. Our local store doesn't like to replace anything. I can go to a store an hour away and they usually ask no questions. Exceopt I bought a saw thar never worked right. The first time I returned it, I was told I had to get it repaired, no replacement on power tools. I used it one time and the motor burned up again. It was used a total of about 15 min. since new. I took it back again, not very happy, young girl said it would have to be repaired. I waited until the next day and got another clerk and got a refund, no questions asked.

Interesting about the power tools. I had a compound miter saw blow up on me(literally blew apart) and they replaced it along with an apology. No hassle at all.

I also have a friend that brought a year old 3/8 drill back and they replaced it too.

Another poster mentioned buying Snap On and avoid the hassle. I know garage owners here that will not even speak to the Snap On driver due to warrenty problems/lousy service. of course I know others that get lousy service from their Matco or Mac driver. Once again, it goes back to individuals.

In my case, if I bought nothing but Snap On, I'd have about 5 tools in my toolbox. Nice tools, but out of my reach.
