I have a Lincoln buzz-box welder (AC only) and occassionally need to weld an implement in the field, etc... I have a Coleman 10 hp 7200 watt generator with a 4-slot twist-lock outlet marked 30 amp 120/240. Can I use that outlet to run my welder if I make an extension cord to fit that plug or won't it run a 240 welder?(I have the right twist-lock cord end for it, had to order it special.) Anyone have thoughts on this, or have done it before?

Can you locate some beefy oil filled electric motor "running" capacitors and tie them across the mains. Enough to carry about 1/4 of the generator's nameplate ampacity. These will handle the nasty lagging reactive current flowing back and forth from welder-generator-welder-generator etc. Instead of loading down the generator's windings/breaker with current that does no work.

Thanks for all the help guys. After reading your comments I had to go out to the shop and you were right, I was messed up on the hp/wattage, it is 13 hp with 7000 continuous watts and 8750 peak. Regardless, thanks for the help and Happy New Year!

Brent,
Ditto on all that"s been said. I have a 5K generator with a 9 hp Honda engine. I run my Lincoln 225 AC welder when I build fence braces with oilfield tubing. I keep it under 100 amps, and I can burn two rods. Then I have to let it cool down for 10 minutes, or the generator will trip one breaker.

My 5200 has a 10hp engine on it. Welding takes a lot of goof. Just keeps the amps a little low and it should work. Check how hot the generator itself is getting every so and so. Jeffcat

I have a 5500 watt (continuous rating) generator, and can run a buzz box welder up to about 160 amps before tripping the overcurrent on the generator. I've never seen any indications of the generator overheating at that load, although I typically don't weld continuously for more than a few minutes at a time, either. Waiting for better weather to get power to the shop, so right now I have to run the generator for anything more than a few lights.

Just wire the two hots & generator chassis ground (no neutral connection) from the generator plug to a socket that matches the welder.

10 horsepower for 7200 watts continuous sounds kind of fishy to me as well. Are you sure that's not the peak rating, in which case the continuous rating would be somewhat lower? At 746 watts/horsepower, the generator would have to run the engine at maximum capacity and be almost 97% efficient to produce 7200 watts continuously. Happy new year!

Keith

Yeah, what they said AND I've got an 11hp Coleman and it runs the heck out of my Lincoln SP-100 so I use it more out in the field than the one of the buzz boxes since it's pretty easy to load and unload.

As long as you keep you amps low on the weld yes you can do it. I don't remeber the math to figure it but I would say you would be good to go if you keep it around/under 135 amps but the 135 might be pushing it to its limit.

I've done it with the same welder but a slightly smaller generator with some success. It runs fine at 90 amps with my 5500 watt generator but if I turn it up to 120 the generator can't quite keep up.

10 hp sounds a little light, maybe yours is 7200 watt peak. I believe my 5500w is 11 hp. Either way, it will work if you don't push it too hard. If the rpms start sagging on the generator, turn the welder down a notch. If the generator can't produce the rated rpms you're just going to get the generator AND the welder too hot because of the voltage sagging.

I've done it several times when I needed to repair a pipe fence or something out at the farm where I didn't have power.
