About a year ago, right after our first snow, my wife was driving our Bonnieville up a slippery hill. The car was spinning quite a little. When she got home I noticed the "traction off" and "anti-lock brake" lights were on on the dash. Thus the anti-lock brakes and traction control features are no longer working. I never looked into it as it really hasn't been a problem. Could this problem be easily corrected? It would be nice....

Thanks, Glenn F.

That car is OBDI. Jumper the "A" and "B" ports on the ALDL and read the codes (flashes of the SES light). See this site for details on how to pull the codes:

Pull the negative battery cable (which clears teh codes) and drive it for a while. If it sets the same codes again, then worry about it.

I have the same problem with my wife's 93 sedan deville. A local garage scanned it with a scan tool and said there were 6 sensors bad in the system and it would cost $1,100 to fix. 6 sensors all bad at the same time? Come on! I wouldn't authorize the repairs so they wouldn't reset the codes. One of these days when I have a few extra bucks, I'll buy a scan tool and reset them myself (and take the black tape off the warning light)

Hi Steve,

That's a garage you wanna stay away from.

Lot of these kids think that if the system sets a particular code, then that particular part is faulty.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The processor does not know if a part is good or bad, only that at one particular time it's readings were out of bounds regarding "normal" parameters.

Trouble codes can be a good diagostic tool. Trouble is they are kinda like a state safety inspection. A low-quality shop will use 'em merely to sell parts or they just don't know any better.

The light would go out by itself by re-starting vehicle if problem was gone, and would store the code. When the light stays on,problem is still present.

That year had problems with the EBTCM(elec. brake trac cont module).Could also be a wheel speed sensor.

Get the codes scanned & let us know.~brad

Glenn,

If I remember right and like Bob says, pretty sure that system sets a hard fault.

Might be just a simple matter of having someone clear those codes for ya.

Hey Allan, couldn't he just unhook the neg battery cable for a short time? That'll clear any codes. Then, if the lights go on again it'll mean something more, like a sensor, is out of whack and needs attention.

I can't remember Ron,

Seems to me that if it has an OBD II system, hard faults hang even with a battery disconnect.

I was with Ford from '99 on and we had to clear hard faults with the scanner. Unhooking the battery wouldn't do it on them anyway.

Yeah, I wasn't sure. Been alot of years since I worked around that stuff. When I worked at a GM dealer around '88-'89 that would clear them, but as ya know lots of changes and "improvements" have been made since then. When the "new" '88 GM pickups came out, the owner of the dealership and I chased a problem where the "brake" light on the dash was on till 10PM one night. Figured something in the ABS system was bad....turned out to be just a fuse blown!

Glad I'm where I am now and get to work on the simpler stuff(not many updates on the operating systems of a cow)!

Still, it wouldn't hurt anything for him to try unhooking the cable.

It COULD be as simple as 1 wheel speed sensor or it's wiring bad, or it could be major, like the 'puter or ABS unit.

The system is set up so if anything, even as simple as a single wheel sensor looks out of whack to the 'puter the 'puter shuts the whole system down, so as not to take a chance of responding to a sensor error.

You need to have the system scanned with a scan tool, correct the fault(s) shown, then have the system reset with the scan tool.
