Question about Fastening Corrugated Steel Sheeting

I'm building a three-sided pole shed, which will be covered with corrugated steel sheeting. I'm using 2' X 16' sheets on the roof, and was wondering if there are any guidelines to fastening them. I'll be using the screws with the rubber sealing washer, but don't know if I should just fasten along the sides of the sheet every foot or so, or should I also put screws in where I'll have cross-braces between the joists every 2 feet. The reason I ask is that I don't know how much a 16' section of this will expand and contract, and will it loosen the fastening screws if I do it wrong. Thanks!

Not to disagree with T-Bone (who has educated me more than he knows), but around here we screw in the flats and nails in the ribs. Screwing in the flats provides diaphragm bracing to the building. Noting the overlap side of the sheet, we screw every nine inches next to the overlap edge of the rib at each purlin (2' spacing). We screw both sides of the ribs at seams and ends. I try to stagger the joints when piecing sheets together. Generally, 30' sheets can be screwed without expansion concern. Longer than that they should probably be pieced together. Consider ordering the steel cut to lenghth. It always saves time, and alot of places charge to the inch, saving a little money.

Hi ebbsspeed,

On the ends, every high rib gets a screw.

On the perlins, Skip two then screw high ribs. If that works out to a full sheet seams. Adjust if not.

Vertical seams every 6".

That's on 26ga SM. If your using the 28ga or 30ga you need to check your screws each year as they'll work loose.

Have you looked at standing seam SM? A much stronger design and takes less screws. Here a metal "U" clip is hooked over the "female" seam then screwed down to the framing then the "male U" slips over the female competeing the standing seam. The standing seam is then button punched (rented/buy) holding the standing seam together (very strong). No visable screws on the sun side of the SM thus no leaks.

The old style barn tin I used to deal with had continuous corrigations accross the width of 2' sheets. However many fasteners you decide to use, bear in mind that there is a "lead edge" and a "cover edge". The lead edge points up-hill at about a half of a corrigation, while the cover edge points down-hill at the bottom of a FULL corrigation. Lapping it correctly will give you a better looking roof.

In corrugated do you mean the old style with round corrugations every 21/2-3". Or are you talking about hi rib or the newer styles of roofing tin.The manufacturer should give you the pattern for fasteners for these newer styles as they are all different & depends on winds in your area. The old styles we put fasteners on every purlin & on 2' wide sheets, 4 across width, 6 on 3' sheets, in the valleys tight to purlin.

You're gonna want to screw it down good. We had a steel roof put on our barn a while back and they screwed each sheet down on every 2x4 (2ft. apart) and then in every other space between the ribs, must be about every 1 1/2 ft or so along the width of the sheet.

A good wind blowing over the top is gonna want to lift them right off. To see what I'm talking about, take 2 sheets of TP, and blow across the top. It'll lift because the blowing over the top will reduce the preasure on the top of the sheets, so the preasure on the bottom is greater and can push the toilet paper up.

Learned that trick from Bill Nye, the science guy....

I guess it depends on how much wind you have. I put 5 - 6 screws in each (2 ft O.C.) purlin. The older heavy tin was done like that. This new tin foil style seems more likely to rip off...

The coeficient of linear expansion for iron is .0000067 per degree F. For a 24" sheet and a 100 degree temperature change, you will get 0.016" of expansion. In 8' you'll get about 1/16". I'd be more concerned with keeping the wind from tearing it off.
