what brand and type of welding rods do you all use most? i have been using 6011 and 7014 for most of my projects and repairs. i only have AC stick machine. is there any AC electrodes to use for welding aluminum? if what is the number of them and where are they available?

yes , they made aluminum welding rods fo ac machines , porche actually used that process in the late '60's on some race cars ....very ugly, I would gas weld aluminum under 1/4" before stick welding , even the 110 migs do a better job, and of course a Tig is the most preferred method . as for the steel ac rods it looks that your already using the correct rods...Shawn

I bought some aluminum welding rod at TSC and tried it out, It sort of glued the aluminum together at best, not a very good job but I did only try it once. I have talked to welders and they told me not to bother trying to stick weld aluminum, sounds like it is real hard to do.

There is a flux coated aluminum rod available. I have used it in a welding class I took a couple of years ago. The flux was pink. I have more info at work but I am not there until tuesday so I can't help you much more til then. I remember it worked fairly well but was consumed in about three seconds!

Hi hay,

6011 and 7014 are extremely good choices for a small AC welder. Low OCV (open circuit voltage) welders are notoriously picky about the electrodes they work well with. If you've been having good results with what you've been using, keep using that. You're not likely to get an improvement by asking other people what works for them.

I once bought and resold two AC welders at the same time; one was an ESAB, the other a Sears Craftsman. Both were simple 240V, low OCV, transformer welders. They liked entirely different welding rods. The Craftsman ran excellent beads with only 1 brand of 6013, 1 brand of 7014, and 2 brands of 6011. The ESAB was generally less choosey, but didn't run excellent beads with anything I had. If I hadn't had a lot of different rod to try, I'd probably have thought the Craftsman was just a bad machine.

If you ever get a chance to weld with a really nice stick welder you'll be impressed at how good a stick welder can be. I have a lot of respect for buzz box type welders, but they are what they are and nothing more.

I use 6011 rods with an AC welder. 6011 works better with rusty metal, which I usually have. 6013 makes better looking welds. 6011 is aggressive and burns deeper easier. I have used 7018 for stronger welds at times, but I find 7018 more difficult to use for some reason.

Brand is whatever the welding supply house has.

Try some 6013, that was used , general purpose, in my friends frane shop.....

I've never heard of a way to even weld aluminum what a buzz box. The stuff burns if you try to weld it with out a sheild gas of some sort. And believe me you don't want to be around if you get the stuff burning. My self I use 7014 and 7018 rod a lot once in a while I use some 6013. I never use 6011

303-292-5319 is the number for a welding supply in Denver.They do mail orders. I was there about a week ago and he showed me a blue rod that can be used on anything including aluminum. I can't find them in his catologe but you can call and pick his brain. He knew all I had was a Lincoln AC arc welder and said they would work.
