I'm considering the purchase of a Roto Zip spiral saw. I've also seen it called a cut out tool. I'm looking at either the Roto Zip brand or one made by DeWalt. I'd like to replace my sabre saw with this. One thing is it might not vibrate things to death like the sabre saw does. Has anyone had any experience with the spiral saws? Any recommendations as to the best brand? Are they worth buying, and will they replace a sabre saw? Thanks in advance.

I have a roto zip rebel. While it is an invaluable tool for doing drywall work and cutting thin materials, I wouldn't recommend it for much else. While cutting a 1/8 inch pine board the motor froze(roto zip replaced it), also the nut that holds the blade down for the zip mate attachment is stuck and haven't been able to get it loose.

I bought the ROTO ZIP when it first came out since it was somewhat revolutionary in it's approach and design. Never regretted it a minute. I work that little devil to pieces and it keeps on going. It,like every other tool, has limitations and performs what it was designed to do but will not replace all duties of the other saws. My wood working shop has mainly Porter Cable and Dewalt. Both are great tool manufacturers. I like Dewalt not only for it's great machine design and consistant near top rating in comparisons but that Bright yellow stands out on the work table, making it easy to find.

i agree with the other posts. Roto zip is a great tool. Don't throw away your saber saw though.
I decided on the Rotozip instead of the De walt but now I cant remember why.(grin)
I think it was because the rotozip came with attachment that wouldn't fit on the Dewalt.(like the circle cutter)
You'll be glad you got one.

I bought a flex shaft for mine and I use it like a powerful drumel tool. It worked great when I was carving out some PVC pipe in the shower drain.

I have one, nice tool for freehand work - holes and odd shapes. Best tool I have found for cutting plastic (acrylic). But I agree with John, not a replacement for a sabre saw, just does things a sabre saw wont. You wont cut a straight line with it without a straight edge.

I got a Roto-zip for Christmas. I like it. It's great for putting holes in the walls of an old house where re-wiring needs to be done. I'm still keeping my sabre saw for other things, however!
