What is the difference between 40 watt 4 foot fluorescent bulbs that are marked CWP and CWX? I have a fixture in the basement that had 40W CWX bulbs in it that are getting dim. I put two 40W CWP bulbs in and they will not light up. I put the old 40W CWX back in and they light up. Both the CWP and the CWX have printing on them that states that they will work in any fixture. I made the switch a couple of times to be sure the CWP type would not work. The fixture itself is an inexpensive Menard"s fixture.

Thanks Bob, for the info. I have already told the wife I will just wire in another light socket above her wash machine and use the screw in type flourescent bulbs. I already use 5 of them in the basement and they provide plenty of light for washing.

My recollection is only difference between the CWP and CWX tubes is the phosphor coating - hence the color of the light produced.

The CWX is a "deluxe cool white" - pretty much the standard flourescent tube. The CWP I recall has poorer color rendition. It's intended primarily for warehouse lighting, etc. where good color rendition is not required. The electrical (including starting) characterists of the two types however SHOULD be the same.

That being said, not all tubes - even the same type number tubes from different manufacturers - behave the same in actual service. As you have discovered some tubes will not even start in certain (usually cheap...) fixtures!

I'd try another set of tubes of another type (or different manufacturer). Or simply replace your existing fixture with a better quality one.

Bought a bunch of "lower wattage" bulbs tor some standard 4 foot 40watt shop lights - they wouldn't start reliably or run properly. Finally had to replace out the whole bunch.
