O/T waste oil burner question

I've read a number of postings regarding used oil and waste oil burners. Are there any oils that won't work. Like hydraulic or gear oil? Or transmission oil? Or an oil which is "creamed up" with moisture? Speaking of which, what effect would water in the mix have upon the burner, i.e. safety issues, and what could be done about it?

We have two oil burners in our shop at the John Deere dealership that I work at. They will burn any kind of oil. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the storage tank that you can drain out any water or antifreeze that gets in there. They work very good. Just keep oil in them and they need little work. We clean the ash out of them about once every month. When we clean the ash we also clean the nozzle and the eye that shoots the oil to be burned. There also is a little screen up there before the nozzle that we clean. The big used oil filter that filters the oil being sucked up gets cleaned very seldom. THere is a gauge on the top of the filter and when the filter gets plugged the pressure increases and thats when it needs to be cleaned. THey are really quite simple and not that hard to clean. It is also a cheap source of heat.

I run 2 waste oil burners. I run any kind of oil you can think of through them. Gear oil hyd oil, trans fluid, motor oil, diesel fuel, gas,vegetable oil, virtually anything that will burn I run it. As far as oils containing water or anti freeze, It does cause some issues. The easiest way to remove moisture is to have a drain at the bottom of your supply tank and drain it DAILY! I also have a mesh screen on my inlet tube in the tank. I also have a mesh screen type filter inline and a spin on fuel filter before the furnace, NAPA # 3116, This filter traps quite a bit of moisture. Try to keep your oil contaminant free and you should be just fine

I am looking for a piece of 4" tubing for the air inlet and I'll be launching into one myself. According to this guy, if your shop is well insulated, you might get by on as little as a gallon or two a day. In the climate of Alabama, I figure I can knock the chill off with an electric space heater on cool days, save the oil for really cold days and not worry unless it is below 55F.

My local oil change place has an oil burner and they heat their shop with it. If I was you go to an oil change place with an oil burner and see what types of oil are able to be burned in it. I would think that oil with water or antifreeze it would gum up the works (but I dont know much about them). Remember too that to have an oil burner you need enough oil to run it regularly.
