I'm a novice welder. Minimal experience. Been looking at the archives re: o/a and arc welding, etc.

I plan on just browsing internet sites for ideas/plans.

Questions I have are:

#1: Am I being unrealistic to think that my Craftsman o/a welder could be ok to do this? I think #5 (1/16th orafice) is the biggest tip I have.

#2: What's would be a good gauge square/angle iron stock to use for framing it up? Would broken out leaf springs (individual spring) work for some of the bracing?

Saw posts re: right setting on tip. Also re: tank draw rate of acetyline. And info re: burning up acetone...oops. did that. didn't know. Time to confess when I exchange.

Thanks in advance!
Dave

yes you can,but it's slower than he--.pick up a used 100 or 125 amp ac buzz box.they are cheap(around $100.),usefull and easy to find(usually).wouldn't use spring,welding usually makes them brittle.would work for tines though(bolted on).1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/4 or 3/8 angle should make a good frame

dave , i have used my oxy\ace tourch for welding .25" steal but it goes so slowly that i would recomed you buy an ac/dc arc welder it will make your project allot easier . also rember that welding on springs tends to take the temper out of them.

Seems that just a few projects with the arc welder will save enough on the cost of gasses for the O/A to offset the cost of the arc welder-plus the saving of time mentioned by others. My supplier is really proud of his welding gasses!
