A friend of mine is giving me a '91 LeBaron with a bad transmission. Years ago I added a little brake fluid to the auto trans of my '81 Reviera which lost reverse. The fluid expanded the seals and I got another 25,000 miles out of it. I guess the LeBaron is losing forward gears. On bad days it only has second gear. Do you suppose brake fluid may be the ticket? I have nothing to lose. The car will be for my 17 year old son.

Thanks, Glenn F.

Thank you for your feedback. I think I'll be getting the car next week. Then I'll know for sure what the symptoms are. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks, Glenn F.

I used the old brake fluid trick likely 10 times and it worked about 9 times.
But that was with transmissions that were slipping
It sounds like yours is good and tight but wont shift from second.
To me that sounds more like a blockage.
I would run it till the trans was to operating temp then drain all the trans fluid and strain it very good.
I would put the old fluid back in and operate to operating temp and do it again and a third time.
If it started to get better then I would put new fluid into it.
If it didnt get better I would bark up another tree.
Oh ya. Change the trans filter or clean and blow out very good.

Is that one of those Dodge computer controlled transmissions? If so, try disconnecting the battery cable and turning the ignition switch on for about 10 minutes. then turn the switch off and reconnect the battery and try it. I've heard of people having the computer for these transmissions lock up and cause what you describe. Won't cost anything to try, and maybe you'll get lucky.

Glenn if you are going to add something put a seal conditioner or friction modifier in it, at least they are designed to be in the transmission. Chances are they arn't going to help but you have nothing but a couple of bucks to loose. If this is a 3.0 V6 O/D unit it is programmed to go into "limp-in" mode when it detects certain faults (slipping etc) which prevents it from shifting out of second gear. Also these are a very failure prone units with many up-dates avaliable both from the after market and Chrysler. Good luck!!
