I have a problem understanding the diference in midmount framemount etc. The way I see it they all put all the load on the front wheels. Some hard headed family members see it diferently. Will someone please settle this and save driving 3 tractors 10 miles to town!

The only thing between them, from a farmers perspective (atleast mine), is that a mid mount frame would be fine on tractors like Oliver's, Ih's, etc that had a farme to hold the engine and therefore should be adequately supported to have extra load on the engine tub. However, on tractors where the engine IS the frame supporting the 2 ends,. such as Massey's, you'd really want the frame to extend to the rear axel so your not pushing against the engine. Either way, the weight distribution is about the same, it just where they push from. Any serious blade mounted on a bull dozer or a tractor would be mounted all the way toward the back, instead of just hanging on the front.

Preferably, it would be pushing from the carriage of the crawler so as not to put undue stress on the rest of the machine. Same thing with a tractor, I'd rather have it clamped right to the rear axels than pushing through the whole transmission case.

As previously stated. Same weight on front wheels with any mounting system. The different frames styles vary with the type of tractor and if the tractor frame/main cases need reinforcement. We have all seen some sad slob with more loader and and load than tractor and frame.And his tractor in two pieces. Bet lots of money with the family members and make it public knowledge. Pocket the winnings and enjoy. Spending time in math or physics at school and paying attention can be rewarding.

You are still puting the weight on the front wheels, but how much depends on how fare in front of the wheels the bucket is. The higher yo lift, the closer to the pivot point you get , so the less on the front, and the less is taken off the rear wheels. You cannot put weight on the rear wheels lifting with a fornt end loader. Lake was said before, the different types of mounts just destribute the stress to a different part of the tractor.

Hi ihfan,

Too early in the morning for serious calculations but:

Think of your loader as a first class lever from the BUCKET end, "C". Label the tower mount "B". Lable the front axle center line as "A".

Example:
Length C to B= 10ft, A to B=1ft, Load weight applied to C = 1000lbs

the total load weight at "B"= 10x1000= 10000lbs

Load weight at "A" the fulcrum is = 10000-1000=9000lbs With "C" remaining constant.

Slide "B" toward the rear axle 5ft with BC remaining constant 10ft.

Load weight at "A"= 10000-5000=5000lbs
load weight at "B"=10000lbs

So yes it does matter where the pivot tower is located and where the fulcrum point is. Most loaders also use the pivot tower as a fulcrum so then the front axle is unloaded even more. We also would now have two fulcrum points, one at "A" and one at "B".

From the above then a pivot tower located behind the rear axle would clearly have the least amount of front axle load.

I'll let someone else calculate the the double fulcrum load but I thought this might help.

T-bone, didn't think it would ever happen but back up. You are making it too complicated. You have a down pressure at the bucket and the front axle is the pivot point. Rest of tractor counter weights the lever. Leverage, and weigh on front, depends on distance from bucket to front axle. Nothing at all depends on where, or even if, the loader pivots. It would be the same if it were a straight plank extending out front. Kenny, Statics course Colo A&M 1950.

You are right on Kenny, at least according to Colorado State University (formerly Colorado A&M) Statics class 1996.

The difference I see in the front loaders and the F10 type is not where the weight is carried (wheel wise), but how the frame of the tractor is stressed...

Hi Kenny,

Although my math contained errors in my post (I did warn you), I'll stand by my therory.

Example:
F350 PSD Dually (not exact weights but close)

Empty front axle weight=4400lbs
Empty rear axle weight= 3600lbs

Loaded front axle weight= 4650lbs
Loaded rear axle weight = 7600lbs

Wanna see my front axle weight increase to 5000lbs? Just shove some of that rear axle weight forward in the bed.

How then is my F350 any different than my tractor loader example?

Just think of a front end loader as a teeter totter pivoting on the front axle of the tractor. No matter how the loader attaches the weight is still balancing on the front wheels. As one of the other poster's said the mid mount loaders were mainly developed to provide more clearance for big tires on MFD tractors.

I have no scale tickets to prove it, but I tend to agree with the guys that say the weight applied to the front or rear axle is determined by how far the load sticks out in front of the tractor.

I also believe some of the tractors with front wheel drive simply don't have enough clearance between the front tires and the side of the tractor to accomodate anything but a mid-mount frame loader. The mid-mount frames seem to hug the sides of the tractor more than the front-mounts. We chose a mid-mount for this reason, to keep as much turning radius as possible.

Yes, during use, all loaders put the heat out on the front end and it's just a question of how much of a trade off between convenience and front end wear a guy wants to accept between the styles.

The differences show up during the 80% duty cycle that the loader is not being used for work.

I hate mid-mount and front hangers because they are continually putting weight (wear) out on the front end even when they are not in use.

However, sure wish I could find a nice front-hanger in good shape, tho. They are handy. :>)

Think of the loader as a lever arm extending out from the front of the tractor. From a practical standpoint, the only thing that affects how the weight of the loader and any weight in the bucket is distributed between front and rear wheels is the location of the loader (and load) center of gravity along this arm. In fact, if the center of gravity of the loader itself and what's in the bucket is in front of the tractor's front axle, it'll actually reduce the load on the rear wheels.

Assuming that two loaders have the same center of gravity, how they're attached to the tractor has no effect on weight distribution (I think that's what you're asking). How the loader is attached does have a significant effect on how the loads and resulting stress gets distributed through the tractor structure. Some mounting points are better able to withstand the stress imposed by the loader, but that has nothing to do with weight distribution between front and rear axles, all else being equal.

The biggest difference I see b/w mid and rear axel mount is where the loading and lifting stress is on the tractor. When loading an axel mount the tork is applied from the tire-wheel-axel-axelhousing-loaderframe. With mid mount you have to add in differential housing-tranny housing-bellhousing and sometimes the frame depending on make of tractor and style of loader. Lifting the load is still upto the front bolster and tires, but the counter ballance is somewhat different. axel mount lift by pulling up on the rear axel to counter the weight in the bucket, while mid mounts lift at the mounting point, ie. bell housing or frame rail. I like the axel mount for heavy digging but like the easier removal of the quick attach mid mounts. I have seen two tractors that were of the late model no frame style that had been broken in the middle by abusive use with a mid mount loader.

They don't put all the weight on the front end but they put a good bit of it on the front. I'd say you put 70-80% on the front It also depends on how high you lift the load. I know on my Ford 841 if you lift the load as high as it goes you put a lot more weight on the rear end but, you are also more likely to lay it over on its side when you do that.
