Shielding gas for TIG

Can you use 70% argon/30% CO2 like that is used for MIG welding for a TIG? Welding supply closed but TSC has those shielding gas tanks. Trying to finish welding soem Christmas gifts up this weekend.

Nitrogen can be used in place of argon for TIG on stainless. But I've never tried it on aluminum. Argon is the universal gas for TIG for most metals. So I wouldn't try other gases on TIG except tri-blend (stargon) in a pinch.

CO2 is not an inert gas and is only used for MIG welding. For TIG welding steel or Aluminum Argon is used. For stainless Argon can be used as well. On some metals mixture gasses are needed for proper welding. Dave

Ray, 25-75 does not work for most TIG applications...but what are you welding steel/alum./upsidaisium????argon is the universal tig gas closely followed by helium(hence the name heli-arc) Can you rent a helium bottle from a local rental all that does ballon parties, it will get you by....but the welds are a little more difficult to get pretty, but the penitration is deeper. good luck, Shawn

I never thought about going and grabing a helium tank from some kids ballon party, but I will keep that in mind. Can't believe the welding supply has been closed the last couple of days.

Article in the paper about heilum being in short supply. Party places may not get a refill until after Feb 14. Big deal for them.

Hey Ray , who are you dealing with for your gas???AGA bought out just about all the mom and pop welding shops around here...my favorite shop just north of Flint had... and I do say had great discounts on welders and supplies and were very competive on gas prices as well until they got bought out.... have a merry X-mas , got to get up early and milk ... Been dealing with Plymouth Wayne Welding, they pretty much did the same thing, either bought out everybody else or the other shops could not compete. Get to take my time getting up, the only cows I have to work are my beef cows and I can feed them about any time I get to, although those momma cows get cranky at me if I wait till afternoon for their grain. No. Tried that when I ran out of straight Argon in the middle of a rush repair at work. Absolutely will NOT work on stainless, never tried it on aluminum, but I doubt it seriously.

Wound up driving 70 miles to borrow a tank from another plant. (Weekend, gas place not open...)

I'm almost positive the answer is no. Seems like I tried that once in a similar situation, but my crs is acting up.
