I've been observing the whole gift and giving thing all my life. I've come to the conclusion that all too often giving to a person just makes them expect more and, in a sense, makes them dependent on you. From extended family experience, family will turn on you if you stop giving to them - so we never started giving to extended family.

We mostly give our kids books; they don't seem to create the sense of entitlement that many gifts do.

Outside of our immediate family, I give only tools to my nephew who is struggling on the farm. I feel they will benefit him more than anything else that I could give him; he uses them and appreciates them. We don't give any gifts to any other members of the extended family; if they want something, they can earn the money and buy it for themselves.

You bet guys! I am the cook in my clan. People I work with and nice neighbors Etc. get a big Ziplock bag of chocolat chip cookies. I work on that for three nights in a row! Nine or ten batches of cookies. Now I eat a {few}, but most of them think the cookies are real good. The family & I try to find some kind of little cute thing or a gift card. My mom is always the hardest to get something for. My cats today got their Christmas gift. I gave them a big can of Alaskan salmon. Boy were they happy!
Right now on Turnner the movie A Christmas Story is on. I used to listen to Jean Shepard on WOR out of New York from the late 50s till 1976. It is such a shame that he is now remembered for a most wonderful movie after he has passed on. The dogs just got the turkey off of the table! You'll shot your eye out kid! Jeffcat

Jeffcat,

Jean Shepard was also heard on the west coast. I didn't know he passed on. Do you know if any of his stories are on CD or tape? I think I'll check eBay to see if anything is available. The one I remember is about the Sears Roebuck build-it-yourself house kit that was shipped in a box car to a fellow. All his friends came down to the train yard to help unload it and have a party at the same time.....

I like giving gifts to loved ones. I try to pick something from the heart, or something that the recipient has a genuine need for, not some useless trinket purchased for the sake of having something under the tree. Our family uses wish lists on Amazon to give other people some idea of what they are interested in.

After I turned six or seven I observed my mothers side of the family get gifts from a x-mas grab bag exchange. Needless to say it changed me, insisting that a gift had to be home made by the giver.

When the kids were small we did the Santa thing and all, I have friends of a different religion than my own, that tell the children from small on about Santa etc. Their think that total honesty is utmost---NO Santa, Easter bunny, tooth fairy---but yes to their Lord.

I have for years told everyone that if they feel the need to give me a gift, please send the recipt so I can give it back to the store for cash that I will give to a less fortunate family. Then I expect them to reflect what Christmas is.

I also get way out on a limb regarding funerals, weddings, & religious giving, as it seems the dollar bill is the most important factor. Perhaps Corperate America has a master plan to get our money---Do ya think!

I'm sure some folks think I'm way out there, but I suggest you think of your child hood, then adult years--what was the best meaningfull gift you ever recieved. I willing to bet it was not from a wealthy person, nor a big dollar item.

I try to give all year long in kindness, and assistance. I also reflect alot on what others do not have, and note how happy they are. Our families and health are the most important. Gifts perhaps not so much. Merry X-mas NE IA Dave

Christmas is for Kids, especially the little ones like my 5 year old. And the once in a while gift for an adult friend who is not expecting a nice gift like 2 years ago I gave 4 of the women that I used to work with these microwavable slippers that keep your feet warm on cold nights, $10/each, its the thought that counts. Of course I wouldnt mind getting a pile of cash for Christmas from an employer or dead relative.

I really enjoy giving gifts to my wife and kids. And I like getting gifts. I don't understand women tho, why is it that a guy likes tools that he can use in the shop, but a gal hates getting kitchen tools.

The idea is that its a fun thing to do. If you are not giving any you certanily not going to recieve any, I agree it can get carried away. The gift thing can also go a long way in mending strained relations, or making someone just feel good. Dont be a Scrooge.

This year instead of exchanging gifts, that no one needed, to extended family members we see only once or twice a year, the decision was made to contribute to the Alzeimers Society (mother-in-law and cousin's father have it). Mother-in law's family Christmas party resulted in $485 to the Society while cousin's resulted in over $300. The Society issued tax reciepts as well.

You got it right on... just want you to know, I DON"T NEED a worldly event to give some one a gift,, IF I find that some one is in need of some thing and don't have the means to buy it, then I will give them what I think they need, and not what they think they should have. I don't get into Worldly events to make some one else rich...(that's just being Stupid)

I agree. This whole gift giving thing is blown way out of proportion. Several years ago a couple of my sisters were suffering some financial difficulties, so we all got together and made the decision that none of us would give gifts that year, and none of us ever missed it or felt left out. Now we make sure that the grandkids all get a gift or two, and the rest of us don't even worry about recieving a gift that we can't use. We all need to remember what Christmas is all about, and just get together and have a good time.

If you take the time to make a Study on Christmas --- you will learn what it's all about, and it is not what you think it is....
