Can I modify my old 10 Amp battery charger to be safe for Optima gel batteries? Is the difference just a lower output voltage? Can I use my old charger for a short time or will it fry the battery?

Hi Stump,

For $18 you can buy a 2a charger with the new PMW regulation circuit that will recharge a battery in 1/2 the time as the old regulators.

PMW regulation is good for any type of battery.

A yellow top Optimia is 75a/hr so if your at about 38a down when you need recharged, then it would take less than 24hrs for the 2a charger to be back too 100% battery.

Wally World sells the 2a Schmachker trickle charger for $18. I've had one for a year and it seams decent for what I need.

Same luck here,a small charger without a fast or boost charge position will not dry out an Optima if it tapers down to 2 amp or less and is not left on indefinatly. Small point, but the Optima batterys are an AGM absorbant glass mat battery with liquid electrolyte soaked into the fiberglass mat seperators. The gel cell battery has a almost jello like semi solid electrolyte. They are a totally different animal that plays by a different set of rules. The spiral cell AGM battery is a superior cranking battery with a very long life under hard use.
