Curious if anyone has built a welding bench? I find that I frequently need a place to do some welding and no convenient place to do it.

Here is what I am thinking of -
Mobile unit on locking casters or pop down casters
Versatile/assist GMAW, SMAW, FCAW, GTAW & Brazing
3'x 5' (LxW)
Adjustable 30-42" tall
Removable tray for slag/debris disposal
Heavy Grate for welding surface & easy grounding

I made my weld table out of set of tractor dual rims. Just layed them down flat and slid one into other. Welded 3/4 flat plate on top piece I had left eas about 4foot square. In center in cut a 8 inch diameter hole. This allows cutting and metal pieces swept to inside of table base. I placed a 55gal barrel inside of the rims, then set entire uinit over barrel with my shop hoist. It contains allmetal parts and makes for nice containment. I also install right above a Hog feeder lid which I mounted a fan and tube to outside of building. If want more info call319-257-6764

Shepfl, i'm kinda short, so i don't like a tall table (you'll be eating sparks if too tall), i would say about leg inseam height . i'd go for the flat metal also, as flat and as thick as you can find (3/8 to 3/4). have at least one corner at exact 90 degrees so you can use it as a square. add ribbing underneat but leave room around perimeter for clamps. weld a grounding tap to the leg to ground to. and don't paint top. the casters might be ok but the adjustable height might make it weaker and the top needs to be flat (in a plane). weld a short pipe to one of the legs to hang the insulated release handle of the electrode holder in. sorry to run on so, but this is a tool that will make work more of a pleasure from now on. oh yea, spray anti-splatter stuff on top, but you will still have to knock and sometimes grind splatter off every few months.

Hi Shep, I never did like grating for a welding table because a flat table works so much better. Maybe a flip top to grating would work well. As far a portable goes, just being in the same shop area has always worked for me cause you don't have to look so hard at whats flamable stored on the hotside of cutting. I picked up some 1" hard steel for a welding table that works well with 3" pipe legs for .11/lb. Put 2x2" angle iron at a 30 degree angle on the underside of the table for cutting. Welding table is 2ftX6ft and same size for cutting. Works ok for home use.

The factory closed that I retired from. The auction to dispose of the contents was a goldmine. I bought a 5ft X 9ft X 1 3/4in. welding table for $50. That is less than scrap metal price, and I just needed to sand it smooth to use it. Getting it home was a major job though, I loaded it with a fork truck and at home my loader only lifted one end at a time. If I move the new owner can have it. Anyway, this is a place to buy a welding table, if NAFTA has shut down a factory in your area too.
