I have some rods that do not have any numbers. The only identifiers are a black and red dot. do any of you know what they are for?

They haven't used the color dot system for years. The only recent rods I've seen are lincoln that some types have dots.(6010) What colour is the flux and how thick is it? You might be able to compare it to new rods. How does it weld? They're probably old rods and I wouldn't use them on anything very critical. Light duty stuff would probably be OK. You'll be able to tell the most by welding with them. Hope this helps. Dave

Often an experienced welder can weld with one of the electrodes and make a reasonably good evaluation of the type. He will usually know if he encountered similar ones before.

Hi mj,

Lincoln's Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding color chart for identification of stick electrodes by colored dots does not list red as a color which was used. Good luck.

Are the color spots both on the uncoated rod or is one on the flux?

For the most part the red dot is on the flux and the black is on the uncoated portion. These are 1/8 in rods and the flux coating is a gray color.the thickness is about normal for a 6011 rod.

I know these are old rods, but was wondering if they might be hard face rods.

If you think they might be hard face rods, lay a bead down and take a file to it. You don't have anything to lose--maybe lay down a bead of 6013 or similar as a "control" and see how it compares.

Hi banjo,

From your flux description along with using a black spot color with a red body (reverse colors of what you have) that would be 6028 or decking rod.

Your standing bent over with the rod in the end of the electrode holder then you burn a hole thru the decking to the bar joist making a round weld button, let cool, then move and repeat. a real back breaker of a job!

Tim makes a very good argument for a trial run.

Usually a electrode with a thinn flux coating is made to penetrate with very little flux interference on the molten puddle, like 6010 or 6011 does.

well the only rods i have to compare them to are 7018,6011. I do very little welding, except for repairs on stuff around the farm.

I didn't compare the thickness of the flux but trying to go by memory. the flux may be a little thicker than a 6011 but i dont know if it is as thick as the 7018. Memory may not be all that accurate. but the flux is gray and the red dot is on or close to the flux/uncoated portion and the black dot is closer to the end of the uncoated portion.I have no idea how old these rods are as they were in my Grandpas shop.

there are some other rods also that are reddish brown flux color but i cant remember if they have numbers or not. They are pretty skinny. thanks
