I have a 4k Coleman with a Briggs engine I bought 15 years ago, and while it only gets occasional use, when it is used it is serious. 10 years ago, it ran 3 1/2 days continous duty, last summer 4 days contiuous at full load after the storms, and 2 weeks ago 2 days contious duty at full load. it runs 8 hours on a 5 gallon tank of fuel, and at full load does require a small amount of oil every 4th or 5th tank of fuel (that is 25 gallons of gas, or about 40 hours of run time. M only complaint is it needs to be a little bigger.

Ross,
Don't know what $700.00CND, translates to USD, but for 700.00USD, you can buy a 8550 surge 5550 running watt Briggs generator. Decent little unit for the money. Been a good genset in my opinion. Colemams are not bad, but they are not a real high quality genset. Jim

Coleman generators have a plastic end bell on the generator that lets the bearing spin.End bell shot.

Can't hurt to take a look at Generac. They built the OHV 45 degree slant engine that Honda copied. They even have an oil filter. Price is right too. I have an old pelter of a 4000XL here with unknown thousands of hours from being run all day for six days a week for a Menonite construction company. The old swine still cranks up, runs and starts electrical loads better than a new 5000W Coleman.

Ross,

I dunno about the 5000 W model, but we've got a 10000 W here on the fire department. It's Briggs powered. It works fine, but the Briggs will wear you out before you get it lit. We've also got other old Briggs engines around, and one Tecumse. They've got a starting routine too, and want some warm up time before they'll work right or idle. Not a whole lot bad to say about them, but they just don't start or run like the Honda's. We've got a few around between the fire department and the farm, and they all start easy, often on the first pull. If they don't, they need tuning.
If it was me, I'd be watching the Merchant for a good used one with a Honda OHV engine. Good luck.

Roddie

Tecumseh makes several models of engines. I have a floating water pump with a pressure lube tecumseh engine. The pumps have also been fitted with Honda and Kawasaki engines. In talking directly to the manufacturer, they said the Tecumseh lasted the longest as long as the oil was changed every 6 to 8 hours. I was never a fan of Tecumseh but when according to the OEM this particular one will last 1500 to 2000 hours longer than a Honda or Kawasaki, I'll just change the oil more often. It's only 6 hp but the pump is $2000. Tecumseh have been the engine of choice for snowblowers for eons. A lot of high end lawn mowers are using Tecumseh as well. The Coleman generator is a light duty residential model with a lower grade engine that is noisier. I bought a Robin Subaru generator that is as good or better than a Honda for a lot less money. Robin are the #1 engines in Japan. Hope this helps. Dave

Not sure about the going rate in your area, but that sounds a little overpriced to me. Especially for one with a Tecumseh engine. I'm not a fan. They're quite loud, and I've never had much luck getting them to hold a tune.

B&S **builds 3 levels of quality small gas engines. (Honda *builds two) B&S's top of the line are called Vanguards and are as good as or better than any other small gas engine built. I would choose one over any Kohler any day any time. Tecumseh need not apply!

I don't feel the Honda OHV model is over rated, but they also sell a lower end motor that is called OHC... There's a BIG difference between these two motors...

I'd buy a better quality gen. set if it was me.... (read Honda of Yamaha)

* Honda does NOT build all of there motors in Japan any longer. Some are built in third world countries.

** actually Briggs has there Vanguard motor build in Japan by two or three different companys depending on the size of the motor.

I would steer clear of tecumseh. Had a lot of gen. sets over the years, worked in n.w. woods.Hard to beat a Honda or a ind.B&S.

Ross - Like Bus Driver, given the choice I go with a generator with the B&S overhead valve engine. Particularly if it's gonna get used a lot.

HOWEVER I've owned a Coleman/Tecumseh 5 kw generator since 1991. It's never given me a lick of trouble in 15+ years of emergency backup service (averaging probably 10 hours of run time/year). And it starts always on the 2nd pull regardless of the weather. For the money I paid I'd buy another just like it...

Same story here; almost exactly. AND I won"t pay an extra red cent for a Honda; I"ve had better luck with B&S, Kohler and Tecumseh.

Personally, that is not the generator I would choose. In over 50 years of owning and operating small engines, I have had only one Tecumseh that was a good one, and it was a very good one. The remainder were real junk. I am unwilling to try them again. I have had only one bad Briggs and it was not terribly bad. Never owned a Honda small engine, but it is difficult to find an owner who is displeased.

I find the Honda on my pressure washer is often hard to start. It always starts, mind you, but sometimes I'm about ready to drop-kick it before it does.

And the Tecumseh on my wood chipper always starts second pull.

I'd take a nice Briggs and Stratton over either of 'em...

I was in the town of Techumse last year. The small engine factory was going under untill they got a contract to build Briggs. Thats like Ford building Chevys. Hondas are a little over rated IMHO.
