Power feeder help needed

I have a 1/4" Busy Bee power feeder on my shaper. It's the same unit sold by Grizzly and Delta. An Allen wrench turns a grub screw on the column to lock the vertical adjustment of the device. It is critically important that the unit be rigid, as the rollers often operate very close to the shaper knives. The screw is fine but the last time running it I stripped the threads on the casting which holds the screw in and the two large metal arms together.

The screw is 3/8 in diameter with a 3/16" portion which locks inside the slot in the column. The thread on the 3/8" part is almost but not quite the standard 3/8" NC. This adjustment seems to be the only weak point on a pretty good machine.

If anybody has worked on one of these and/or has any useful suggestions, I'm all ears.

I would drill it out and put a helicoil in it. That way you can pick your own size (3/8") and you can probably get something with a large knob on it to omit the need for the allen wrench.

I showed up at 8:00 a.m. at the local U.A.P. and asked for a helicoil. The clerk showed me an assortment of packages including taps, inserters, and a bunch of coils in each. Fine. He rang it up at $88.59! Holy Smokes! The tag above the display had said $21.70.

I left in confusion without the coils. Must find more cost-effective way to do this. Mind you, that 88 bucks is keeping me from using two thousand dollars worth of equipment, and I need to make some raised panels and two windows...

More on this later, no doubt.

Thanks for the suggestion. Now it's a matter of getting a better price.

Rod, most Helicoil kits that I buy around here run between $20 and $30. Was your set gold coated or is the exchange rate that bad now?

It's probably metric 10mm threads.
