The smoke and flames all leaked out of my old 5 amp Craftsman grinder. I acually smiled at it while it was burning because I've used it hard for decades and got more than my moneys worth out of it. Anyway, I bought a 7 amp Makita because it had the regular on off switch not the newer safty switch that you have to hold too constantly. Another difference between it and all the competetors was that the side handle is angled slightly foward and I almost went with the Dewalt because I thought the handle may put your hand too far foward and in the way. I can gring all day with this newer angled handle but the bigest difference is that I can control the thing much better. All this makes my grinds smooth and I don't have all the small gouges I used too. I also used a super thin cut-off wheel on this grinder and have once again put off the want for a plasma cutter because these thin wheels work great. They are like a die grinder cutoff wheel only 4.5 inches in diameter.

Yea those wheels are .045. Sait makes them and WOW do they ever cut FAST! Just wear the old eyeball glasses and you should be fine. Here in NJ they are not carried by that many places cause they think of the old dangerous stuff. They cost around $1.70 each and you can buy one or ten at that price. Box price drops a little. In a pinch I used them to cut thin heat stone for a pizza oven when I forgot the diamond blade at home. Take care and have fun. Jeffcat

Give me the "deadman" switch any day. Nothing more frightening than seeing the grinder catch in your clothing and suck itself into your flesh - and nothing you can do about it!

fwiw, I've used a lot of cutoff wheels over the years. None of them compare to the DeWalt wheels. Not by a long shot.

A snow plow shop was using the Makita.Fellow dropped one when he was close to the floor.the grinder self propelled and cut a groove in his butt. You may like the saftey switch if this happens. These grinders can kick back like a chain saw.

Hi Dan,

Butts come with grooves in them. I'm surprised you didn't know that already. OTOH, it still might work as an L&I disability scam. Those people don't know their butts from their elbows, and elbows don't have grooves.

Merry Christmas, Stan

This fellow has two grooves now .The Makitas were replaced.I talked with a fellow who saw it happen.Handy tool but dangerous.Any one who uses one knows it..They will throw wire and paint chips and rust particles and get some one working nearby.

Don't ya just love those ultra thin wheels. If someone has never used one, I recommend you buy a couple to try out. They are only about 3/32" thick and are about like using an electric carving knife.

Love 'em, couldn't get by without 'em at work. Just the ticket for cutting complex shapes out of sheet stainless.

But at $4+ apiece, Boss ain't too thrilled with 'em. Easy to go through 4-5 of 'em a day when working on a big project.

Nope, nothing like that here in East Overshoe. Boss gets 'em through McMaster-Carr. Have to go through companies we have an account with, I guess.

On the upside, the kvetching about how much we were spending on abrasives bought us a REALLY nice Jet horizontal bandsaw. 10" throat, 220 motor, coolant pump, the works...

Hi folks
Try the thin wheels on gutter work and steel roofing. Faster than any hand shears.
