I went to an auction yesterday and got a welder. The front panel says Solar 230 Amp Arc Welder. In another spot It says 1984 Century Mfg. I got it for 60 bucks. I don't know how to weld, but I would like to learn. I have a few questions now and I'm sure I'll have more later. Is this a good brand? Did I spend too much? Any other pointers and suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll need to get my shop wired for 230V and get a helmet. I've got plenty of scrap metal to practice with. I worked 21 years in a farm store and I've sold lots of welders and welding supplies, Just never got to use them.

I can't really add much except WEAR PROTECTION! You want to get suited up in every odd-looking piece of welding gear you can get. No fun getting UV burns on any part of you.

Amen! Frank, you can get very serious burns on exposed skin and not even know it untill it is too late. Neck, chest, arms, etc. Years ago, i watched my dad weld while holding only a lens to my eyes with no helmet. Could see the flashes, but thought since i had the lens, it would be okay. Wrong!! Had a miserable couple of weeks with the eyes. Still wonder if it is why i have to have reading glasses now. Be careful!

Century sold quite a few wire welders under the Solar name tag. You have a good buy at $60.00 if it works. You should take a basic welding course at the very least if you want to learn to use it, and, get a good text book for reference. Not the heaviest built machine but well worth $60.00 in operating condition.

You probably got a good buy. Try using 3/32"dia. rod, and start with the lowest amperage that will hold an arc. Then practice until you're tired. You'll be surprised at what you'll learn in a short time. If you want to read up on welding, the library and internet have considerable references. It's fun if you want it to be.
