I am looking for Christmas gift ideas for my father-in-law. He farms about 180 acres a year, and like many of us, tries to get by on the bare essentials. He recently built a large building/shop. Anyone have any cool tools or ideas to share. Looking to spend up to $120.

Thanks.

Mike

If you are careful, you can get fairly good shop tools at Harber Frieght.....I have four of thier hand, 4 1/2" cut-off / grinders....pittsburg screwdrivers, and pittsburg hand wrenches....these tools are used every day,buy 3 people ...4 or 5 years old , not a failure yet..... We just bought thier big air compressor..... Don

Metal cutting chop saw. I had no idea how handy they were until I got one as a gift.

Personaly one of the best tools around the shop is a good angle grinder. Also a load of good disks to go with it. Also buy the sand paper setup to go with it for finish work. One of the most handy things I could think of! Jeffcat

If he's got a new shop, Maybe some 2x4's and some plywood, mixed with some simple carpentry skills might end up with some creative storage space. We have one wall dedicated to various size shelves. The neighbors refer to it as the local hardware store. Bolts, bearings, springs, hose, electrical, nails, paint, steel, plumbing, filters, etc. I'm amazed how many times I've saved a trip into town because of that wall.

Let's just say I'm not the most creative guy in the world....We exchange names among us adult brothers. I always hope I'll get the brother that's still on the farm. Some years I've given him a "gift" of repair welding: all the stanchions in the dairy barn (44 wrecks), his bunk feeder, etc. Another year I pitched out nearly 1,000 bushel of manure from a heifer pen in the spring. I have gifted with relief milking coupons, etc. Another "gift' I've given is, "visit coupons."...good for ten visits while he milks his cows on snowy/cold winter nights. We so enjoy talking old times. Just some practical ideas. Your time/help may be appreciated more than anything else.

Glenn

Great Ideas, keep them coming. I like the idea of the retractable hose reels, but he doesn't use many air tools, but maybe the hose is part of the problem. He has the tools and a decent compressor, but he doesn't really use them. He'd rather grab a socket or a wrench. I will definately check those reels out though. Maybe buy 2, one for him and one for me:-)

Gift cards are a good idea, but he's not a shopper and only buys stuff he really needs.

He doesn't have a heater yet in his shop, and that was my initial gift idea was a Kerosene/Diesel Reddy Heater, but I didn't realize how expensive they were until I started looking. I may still go that route though. It is Christmas:-)

Thanks.....

Just bought a 50' 3/8" retractable air hose reel with hose included at Rural King for about $59 for my shop.Surprized at the quality of it for the money. That would make a great gift.Sears has a 19.2 volt cordless drill on sale for $39.95. That would also make an excellent present.

New shop. How about a trouble light and extension cord the recoils up to the celing. Maybe an air hose that does the same thing.
Does he have a good heater foor his shop.

how about a rechargeable grease gun, maybe a dewalt 1/2 drive cordless impact, or a sawzall. take a peek in the shop with him, talk tools a little bit, he may tip his hand as far as wantin a special tool. we just picked up some cordless drop cords from napa for ablut 60.00. they are led lights and will run about 12 hours on a charge, and you can leave em plugged in all the time if your not using them. i wasnt sure i'd like em at first, but find them handy as heck, no cords to deal with, they are pretty bright, and you can drop em and they dont break.

Good ideas. I've never used a rechargeable grease gun, but I can see where they would be handy. I got him a sawzall last year and he has really used it and commented a few times about it. I will also check out the LED lights.

Thanks...

Best idea I can give you is go over and help him work on something and then when your there look around and see what he might be missing in his shop. I've found thats the best way to find out what a person needs plus you get to help him at the same time which most people always need any how. I know things I could never do with out now days and if any one of them where gone I would be in a world of hurt. Drill press, shop press, pipe bender, my extra large wrench set, etc. The extra large wrench set goes from 1-38-3 inch. Its a cheap set but sure works good when I need it

Speaking as a father-in-law..... best gift.Day after Christmas....offer to help him with his on-going project.

Best Christmas Gift....Christmas Day..... .a little note wrapped in a box that says "I will be here tomorrow to start help'n out." Meantime, see what everyone else got him for Christmas. This way you will be there to see what HE REALLY NEEDS.

Worked for me while I was married. Now, NOTHING I can do for the x-inlaws, while They really need it.

Best of the SEASON....John,PA

Thanks for the ideas guys. Yeah, I try to get down there and help out as much as possible. He only has 2 daughters, the other son-in-law is worthless and I really enjoy helping out and I know he really appreciates it. Just hard to find the time. I've got my 3 little ones, and 120 acres to take care of myself. Not enough time to do it all.. Old, the extra large wrench set was our X-mas gift to him about 3 years ago. He uses his all the time too.

Thanks for the ideas

Well then maybe some of the extra large sockets. I also have a set of them from 1-3/8 up to 2-1/2 or 3 inches. Again I don't use them much but when you need them they sure are handy to have. I got them in impact so I can use them on my 1/2 inch impact with the adaptor for 3/4. Another thing if he doesn't have it thats nice is a chop saw or metal cutting band saw. Suer wish I had a band saw but I get by with the chop saw

Remember all of these ideas for when your daughter, if'N you have one, brings home your "NEW SON_IN_LAW".

Where I come from, the son-in-law marries HER whole family. When she wants a divorce, and re-marries, she divorces you FROM the family.
