Thanks for the help. Ill get a splitter. Harbor freigt has a $49 kit with two sizes. They have a 20 ton press on sale too. Now how do you press the bearing on somthing long like a wheel bearing on a rear axel shaft. I noticed that on the press it is open on the bottom. Do you rest the bearing on somthing and press the shaft down? What part actually pushes on the bearing? None of my pieces of pipe are the right size. I'm missing somthing here. I'm doing a ring and pinion setup. Hopfully. Gears are in the mail.

If you are able to remove it with a screw driver then the use of a separator would not harm the bearing. You git what you pay for and a cheap splitter izz just that JUNK, if you buy one git a name brand made in The USA.OTC izz as good as it gits. If you have never used a splitter it kin be damaged easily. You must set it up so the bolts do not carry the load. All the pressing/pulling will be on the 2 hafts when used in a press so no pressure will be put on the bolts. your press should come with 2 blocks to support the splitter. I do use the bolts if I am using a 2 jaw puller (hook the ends around the bolts) to pull on the separator, But you will never apply the force that you would on a press. Never put a axle in a press and press the full length of the axle unless you have sumin to retain the axle when and it will come out in the blink of a eye and take on all in its path. Allways press from the hub side. Most of the time you have to cut the bearings off the carrier and a axle. More than likely if the carrier bearings have a shim between the bearing and carrier you use the old shim as a starting point. All most always werks out that�s all you need. If you git into having to removing the bearings and do not have the tools one would buy a extra set and hone them out for the initial set up. Once its set up remove�em and install a new set of bearings. http://www.randysringandpinion.com/ lots of good info to download. If the carrier has the outer shims I hope you got the adjustable ones. You are also gonna need a in. lb. Torque wrench. Fer this izz all done you will appreciate that $250 figger to install it.
Wonder were my buddy izz who told ya it�s a cake walk, Ask him. I learned by reading a good repair manual. It took doing 8 or 10 of'em before I got the knac to easyly git the bearings off, sumtime to figger out how to use what I had to werk with. Only one time to break a unreplacable shell in a OEM carrier bearing remover to learn how to not use it, Not I need replace it. I keep werk'in around it but sumday will shell out $400 or so fer a nice'in. I just hope chrysler and Ford keep make'in junk diff's so I kin see it fit to upgrade. BTW save all the old bearing inner races they will come in handy at times when you need to support small parts in the press. I save lots of junk to use in the press, old starter motor housing, pipe as stuff like that. I find the inner races to make great seal drivers welded to a short length of exhaust pipe. I know you have seen were I use'em to install dust boots on the drag links on a N tractor.

Thats thanks twice this week. I picked up the press and I see the blocks you are talking about.
I save all kinds of junk and I will put a box near the press for races and stuff. Turned out the Harbor Freight Dude used to do ring and pinions in the past. I can't wait till the gears,
bearings and shims come in now.

ware safty glass'izz enny time ya beat'in and bang'in on this stuff. Harden metal sure will fly faster than a bullet when it breaks off. Got sum in my belly to prove it. Came close to put'in a eye out hit'in a bearing race. Hear of folks break'in the whindseld out of a car sit'in around while hit'in a bearing, Play safe, play safe while utters are around also.

No offense intended, but if you don't know how to press on bearings you shouldn't attempt a ring and pinion job on your own. Find someone that can help you and make sure they know what their doing. A ring and pinion is not as easy as just replacing the parts. There are shops that do nothing but ring and pinions. If you do it yourself make sure you have a very good dial indicator (read not from Harbor Freight) and don't get in a hurry and think thats close enough.

I've allways used Nappa to press bearings and just because I havent seen it done dosent mean I can't do it. I've read up on proper set up and I'm using the original set up shims with factory Ford gears to make set-up a tad easier. I fix eye surgury instruments for a living . It will be the best setup ring and pinion possible and thats why Im trying to collect all tools and data. Rear end $325,gears and locking differential $600, Alloy axels and c-clip eliminater $475, tools, brake stuff, gear lube ect. I'll be in too deep to not get it right hence the dumb questions. I will regear the front when I get the rear done and the $500 I will save in labor will buy the tools. Tools are good... right? I just gota learn how to use them first. LOL
