The paws on my gear pullers are too fat to get under a bearing I'm pulling. I used a screwdriver and pry bar to get it started and I got it off. The problem is I will need to do it a few more times and I don't want to bugger the bearing. Do I need a special tool? Also I will beat the bearing on with a pipe but am seriously thinking about buying a harbor freight press.I am guessing you buy a set of adapters to press different bearings. I allways used to let nappa press bearing on for me but I want to figure all this out myself. Any advice on pullers, bearing press, adapters ect would help. Thanks

Like said you need a splitter to slide under it and press it off. If you only need a little off the jaws for clearance don't be afraid to grind them off some. I have some cheaper pullers with jaws ground off or things welded to them for special purposes. Check out the Owatanna Tool Company -- OTC tool catalog online for quality pullers and splitters. Can also build your own press from plates and threaded rod also or build a simple splitter too.

HEY STUMPALUMP.
HEAT THE BEARING IN YOUR OVEN.
IN MOST CASES IT WILL FIT WITH EASE AFTER HEATING.
JUST AND OLD TIMERS TRICK.
GOOD LUCK, jackie

An old electric frying pan filled with oil is really good for heating oil to install bearings because it heats very even and the bearing is lubricated inside and out with the warm oil.

FWIW....I've used my 125K btu torpedo heater to heat bearings. Cinder blocks and a piece of copper wire to dangle it in the flame.

Generally the O'Reilly's auto parts store near you will allow you to use one of their. You will have to leave a deposit, though. They will return your deposit when you return the tool. Just use a credit card to make the rental deal. I guess, though, they would like for you to purchase the bearing from them.

Hi Stump
What you need is a bearing splitter. It is made to get under bearings. They should have them at Napa. They come in three sizes.
It is better to press bearings on when possible.
I have beat my share on with a piece of pipe though.
For limited use the press' they have at Harbor Freight are not to bad. It will come with press plates. You could make your own when doing a job that theirs dont work.
