I have a 2003 Dodge 2500 and I'm having a hard time figuring out what size gears are in the axles. The truck has the towing package, Cummins diesel, 6spd manual tranny, and 4wd. The VIN# is; 3D7KU26CX3G720647, I've heard the gear ratio is somewhere in the VIN# but I don't know where. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help guys. the differential doesn't have a tag, I looked there first. At 70mph the engine is running at 2000rpm even. I was thinking if I could find some shorter gears, I might be able to squeeze anothe mile or two out of each gallon. I guess I'll have to swing into the local Dodge dealership and have a chat with them. Thanks again.

Actually, you are wanting longer gears, sometimes called taller gears. It will give your truck longer legs, so it can run faster, but it won't be as good when asked to heavy "grunt" work, such as pulling a travel trailer. Taller gears will make the engine work harder, probably won't improve fuel milage, and might make it worse.

That sounds like 3.73's. Nothing lower numerically is available yet, although the aftermarket is supposedly working on it. Personally, I think you could buy a lot of diesel fuel with the money you'd need to change gears. You know they're going to soak ya good for gears that fit an AAM. And don't forget the drop in performance that comes with it.

Possibly on a tag on the differential? I know Fords and Jeeps are/were done that way, not sure about Chrysler products.

There may be a metal tag attached, or the Ratio stamped on the diff. cover(s) My 2001 3500 also has the HO Cummins & the 6-speed. All the sales lit & specs state that it only came in 4.10, but mine is 3.52, according to what is stamped on the covers.

It's probably in the glove box, although sometimes is only specifies if it has the optional 4.10 ratio. If it says nothing, it would be the standard 3.73 ratio. Those were the only two possibilities. What are your rpm's at 60 mph?

I doubt if it's in the VIN, engine size, yes. Gear ratios usually have a code, sometimes in the glove box. You need a chart that deciphers the codes, usually in the service manual. Your dealer should be able to help you. You can crawl under it (block it up good) and count the driveshaft revolutions as you turn the wheel.
