Dryer stopped working

A friend e-mailed me to ask if I knew how to fix dryers. She asid her Whirlpool dryer just quit working. Like a lot of people on this forum, I can often track down problems and fix things even when I haven't seen that specific situation before. My experience with dryers that don't work has been that it's ususally an electrical disconnection. Is there anything in particular anyone can let me know to look for?

Thanks, Stan

Stan,

I am sure that you can fix this. Electric dryers are about the most simple of all appliances. You have a fan, a drum with a belt, and a heater. And some sort of control. My experience has been that you can keep a dryer operating until the sheet metal rusts through.

Good Luck!

As the others said it could be many things, but....
I've had electric dryers all my life and one thing that happens is that the heating coil burns open.
This means everything works the way it should except there's no heat to dry the clothes. It's a relavely easy fix depending on the brand.
Heating coils are much cheaper than a new dryer.

If it is the heating coil .....generaly they just burn out in one spot and break.....i just take a piece of wire and wire the break back togeather.....worked for me..... ..

"Stopped working" has lots of meanings. First thing I check is the dryer vent, the full length- surprising how often it is clogged. Then the power supply.

It could be a bad door switch, that's easy to check. My last experience was a blown high temp fuse, caused by a faulty high temp switch. Changed them both....happy days.

So is it gas or electric? Could make a big difference.

I'd be willing to offer good odds that it's electric. She lives in an outlying area where gas service would probably have to be propane. Not too many people choose to go that way when electric is the easy option. Thanks for thinking of it.

All the best, Stan

Really need more info to help. Stopped working could mean it spins but doesn't heat or it doesn't spin at all etc. I know I have played with more then one and have made them work a lot longer then one probably should have.
