Looking at small LED flashlights for Xmas gifts and finding the selection overwhelming. Any suggestions in the under $20 category?

One word of cation. The LED lights will cause discomfort to human and animal eyes if they look right into the light.

I have seen and rejected a number of different LED flashlights. Most have little light output as compared to a conventional bulb. The exception that I have found is the "ELEMENT" found at Sam's Club. Has a very bright light, uses 3 AAA cells, and has an acceptable battery life. Will not outshine my 3 cell mag light, but is wonderful for smaller - close in jobs, like car repair, furnace work, clothes dryer repair, general household use in power outages. Convenient size, about an inch in diameter, 5 inches long. Will put it up against many of the multiple led units - the led is centered in reflector, and works well, where the multiple led units can't provide the true parobolic reflector. We've got at least half a dozen of 'em around here - house, cars, barn, tool shed, etc. They're great! Also carry one when hunting. Bright enough to follow blood trail. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY< as I said most aren't bright enough to outlight a cigarette lighter! Cost about $25 a pair.

I love the long battery/bulb life of the led lights,have changed to almost all headlight type that straps on your head,hands free and shines where you look. For the car I like the crank or squeeze type generator lights where you never have to worry about dead or frozen batteries. The shake type work,but in my opinion are clumsy to charge compared to the others.

Got some called 'Nite Blaster' that clip onto your hat bill or where ever. They've got real good light for their size and work everytime. Real handy since you have both hands free. They were about $7.50 at Wally World.

I picked up a nice one at sears on sale a couple weeks ago fr under $10. It's a bit bigger than those little ones, but it's made of stainless and is very bright.

Our Fire Police unit rec"d a flash light that is nice. It is a "shaker" type, but normal movement keeps it on when desired. It has a very bright white light, and a flashing red light under the white one. Also a magnetic base, to stand it up on any steel item. Also a small cord to hang it on your wrist. About 6 inches in length. Probably available from any of the Fire supply magazines! check with the local fire Dep"t. suppliers, or a Police Unit.

I picked up a couple of those tv ones. You shake 'em up to charge the batteries. Put one in the wife's car, one in the daughter's car. Hope they never need it.

i have gotten several little led's at NAPA. one looks like a sparkplug and has a little screwdriver inside(jewelry size) and the other is just about the same size but a plain led light. they are both keychain size. There is also a place called "tool specialist" mthat has just an amazing assortment but may not be in your area. The best light i have found is a windup with 3 led bulbs that fits in a glove box. the batteries never run down. its not like the ones you see on tv but looks more like the old time squeeze ball guns and comes in yellow and blue.

I bought a couple off ebay and took them to Iraq with me, they took all the abuse they got over there, kept working, and I still have them. They were some of the 3 AA cheap ones, I got a red one and a white one. I rarely put batteries in them, even after literally using the red one all night long sometimes. It's amazing how much longer those led flashlights last bulb wise and battery life compared to standard bulb. I highly recomend them.
