I am looking at a 12" DeWalt sliding compound miter saw. Has anyone out there have one or knows of the pros and cons of this saw? I do not have a table saw so I thought the extra money for the sliding saw would help with other projects such as a porch and deck my wife wants this spring.
Any comments?

Thanks in advance!

Best Miter saw i've ever owned. Check pawn shops, some people will get hard up for cash.

Popular Mechanics did a side-by-side comparison of the sliding compound saws just a few months ago (?Dec or Jan perhaps). I don't happen to save many issues. You might check there for some other info.

I just bought a DeWalt metal chop saw (?model 872) with the carbide blade....Wow! what a machine. I also own a DeWalt 12" compound miter saw (not the sliding type). DeWalt puts the handle horizontal instead of vertical. I find this a great advantage....it's a much more natural position to hold the tool by than a vertical handle. Just my opinion.

Just a suggestion...if you want a really good deal check out ebay auctions. I've bought a bunch of new Dewalt & Milwaukee tools on Ebay & you can often really save - BIG! HOWEVER, do make sure your getting what you think by checking the model # with the manufacturer's catalog on their web page.

Also, look at the seller's Feedback. Many tool sellers have hundreds, even thousands of positive feedbacks - meaning their customers were satisfied. Just a suggestion!

I have had my 12" DeWalt Compound Sliding Saw for 3 yrs and have not had any problems with it. It is great for sawing 4"x4" wood. My wood projects have gone together much better now compared to when I was using my circular saw. I got the hold down clamp that fits the saw and recommend you get one if not two (one for each side). It weighs around fifty pounds so it is not too bad to put away and get out and set on the wagon when I want to cut something. You will like this saw when you get it.

I bought mine at Lowe's and took advantage of the 10 percent off for finding a lower price at another store. The sales guy in the tool area got real nervous when I showed him what I had found a lower price on. They honored the 10 percent off deal and I got a great buy. Shop around and maybe you will get lucky.

Good Luck

Greg -

Thanks for the info! I was looking at one in Home DePot. I will go to Lowe's and check their prices. Maybe I will get lucky on the 10% off deal too!

We use a Dewalt 12" sliding compound daily for new home interior trim and love it. We also use Hitachi 10" and 8&1/2" sliders. Like them all. The Dwalt is the heaviest and I think that accounts for some accuracy. The 8&1/2" is the lightest and vibrates the most so least accurate. But all three are satisfactory.
