Hi - I have an old Brunner air compressor. It works great in the warmer months. However, when it gets cold, the motor has a hard time starting it. I use 30 wt non detergent oil in it. Is it possible to safely put in 10 wt oil in it in the winter to help it get started? I know the motor on it is probably at its limit of hp for powering the compressor but it does work fine when warm. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

My Champion compressor was bought new in 1978. It specifies to use 20wt oil, ISO 68 viscosity. It says in the literature that one type synthetic was found to cause RAPID wear and the other two types, there are supposedly 3 types, are not yet tested. I use Mobil DTE 26 hydraulic oil and have been assured by several sources that it is a fine choice for piston compressors that use a 20wt oil. It is the equivalent of the recommended oil in the original literature.

Twincreek, Ive had similar winter problems and discovered it didnt take very much condensation at all in the crankcase to freeze them up. I kept the oil changed to a lighter synthetic regular "air compressor oil" n that sure helped.

What type and weight synthetic oil do you use in your compressor?

Some time back I got it from Graingers (10W as I recall) but I just looked at their latest catalog and they now sell Mobil Rarus 827 Synthetic in either 10 or 30 weight. Id be tempted to use 10 in winter n 30 in summer I believe BUT SUBJECT TO any manufacturer or nameplate recommendations. ID STILL USE SYNTHETIC IN WINTER.

I had 2 compressors go bAd shortly after I used it n initially blamed the oil, but in retrospect I think it was a coincidence n the synthetic oil had nutitn to do with it even though I changed n used regular Ace Hardware air compressor oil a while later.

Put some synthetic oil in it. I did, and no problem starting now.

We put a 100 watt heat lamp on ours, takes about 2 hrs to warm it up.

Sounds like it either needs an unloader valve, or has one that isn't working. It drops the line air-pressure to zero until the motor gets started.

It does have the unloader valve and it appears to be working. The compressor just seems to have trouble getting up to speed when cold.

Drag out the yellow pages and find your local air compressor shop that does rebuilds. They should have heater for you. Some go in the drain hole, filler tube, or if you have a cast iron block, the type with magnet for the side. Good Luck
