Does anyone know if the axles on a 5th wheel trailer are farther forward than those of a tag hitch trailer? I've been doing a litle thinking of converting my 17+3" deckover flatbed to a 5th wheel.

Thanks, Glenn F.

Hi,The idea of a fifth wheel trailer is to put more of the weight on tow vehicle. You can haul more weight on a lowboy than a pintle hitch trailer because you distribute the weight on all axles. So adding the fifth wheel hitch to your trailer, lengthens wheelbase @ puts more weight on tow vehicle.Make sure your frame is heavy enough to carry the extra weight you will put on it. Also frame needs to be heavier because of longer frame from hitch point to axles.

80/20 for goose/5th
60/40 for tag
Axles farther back on a goose/5th you want more weight on the tow vehicle.

I haven't seen wheels farther forward on 5th wheel trailers. The rule of thumb is that the axles should be at the 70%-30% spot on the trailer. Measure the tolal length of the trailer and multiply by .70 and that is the distance from the front ( at the hitch) to the center of the axles. The closer you get to 50-50 the less stable the trailer will be. The farther back they are the more stable it gets but it puts too much weight on the tongue and cuts too far inside on turns.
