Homelites biggest mistake was to stop making them. They also used the powerhead on brushcutters & water pumps. I used the waterpump for years on my sawmill, washing logs. The l 1/2" hose necked down to 3/4" nozzle would cut the bark off logs. Tried a 2" 4 cycle pump but it didn't even come close to XL-12 pump.

Great old saw. A little heavy and underpowered by today"s standards, but virtually indestructable if you mix the gas properly, keep the air filter clean and don"t leave it in the back of the pickup and drive around, letting sand, etc. blow back into the muffler and spoil the piston & cylinder.

The XL-12 was one of the only saws fitted with needle type thrust bearings on the crankshaft, which contribute to its longevity.

The very early XL-12 saws had a large felt filter in the tank that would plug, but it can be converted to later style hose/pickup filter.

The earlier saws were blue, later they were red. Either one was pretty much trouble free.

I still have some parts around, email me if you need anything.

Regards,
Scott

I purchased one about 1975 for $75.00 new. it had a metal case later models had plastic. Good little saw for very light work mine still runs good but sees little use.(camp fire wood etc)

Best darn old saw that I ever owned was an XL-12, used it for years and never had one moments trouble with it. Bought it used from a friend for $20 and the first winter cut and sold 59 ricks of wood. That same winter cut 20 for myself used it for many years, and still have it out in the shop. It hadn't been started for several years, so last fall I dumped the old gas out and put in new. I couldn't believe when it started on the fourth pul and run like it always did. Have a Stihl that I use now and it runs so much faster, but I don't think it is near the saw that my old XL-12 was.
