I am in dire need of assistance. I borrowed an old 5 HP tiller briggs and stratton. It worked fine. I shut it off for lunch, came back and it was very hard to pull start. I finally started it and then it died when I engaged the tiller. I went to pull start it again and it would not budge, i couldnt pull the cord at all. I started tinkering with it and found that there are ball bearings that are in a housing in front of the crankshaft. HEEEEELP!!

I had a 3.5hp small engine sieze once. It was on my go-cart and it just locked up during use. (big spin out) I new nothing about engines, but I took it apart. It freed up when I took the side of the case off. I think I took the head off first. I put it back together and it ran from then on. I have no idea what the matter was.

Moral: At least take it apart before you replace it.

The balls located on the pull rope side are part of the ratcheting crank system. They should not cause the motor to seize. Did you check the oil before you started using the tiller. If it gets low on oil, the bearings can seize. If if got real dirty while you were tilling and the cooling fins got clogged up, then it got hot and the piston seized in the cylinder. Take the whole shroud off and try to turn it with the flywheel. Might free it up. Sometimes you can check with a lawn mower repair shop and they will have a usable used 5 hp B&S for not much money. I've picked up a couple for 25 bucks or so. Folks want a bigger engine and swap them out.

The cheapest and fastest, is to buy a new one. Repairing the old one will likely cost more than a new one. Call around, I've seen about $10 diff. in price. You'll need the model no., and take the old one when getting the new one and compare them to avoid 2 trips. good luck.

Maybe it's only the recoil that seized, they do wear out. That part can be replaced.

Good Luck,
Dusty
