What paint to use for bumper that won't chip off?

I figure you guys have dealt with the rust monster before so maybe can help. I've made a rear bumper and tire carrier for my jeep and the rust already taken a liking to it! I need to find a finishing method (paint or other) that will protect it from rust and won't chip off easily. The swing-out carrier rubs on the top of the bumper by design so the finish needs to withstand that. It also should be smooth. So what choices do I have? Thanks.

This is not very smooth but for the record I painted my ATV 4-wheeler bumpers and cargo racks with the spray-on bed liner that you can buy in a kit. I use it hard everyday around the ranch carrying all kinds of stuff and it has yet to show a scratch.

Get it hot-dipped galvanized.

Hi Tibor - maybe you could add some brass or polyurathane plastic strips on both the bumper and swing out carrier where they rub because paint will soon wear off and both parts will rust. If this is a restoration that you plan to keep forever maybe design a small replaceable part out of leather or rubber to go over the paint - a wrap around, etc..., because where two pieces rub it has to wear. You need to protect the paint.

Hi Tibor, In addition to Dean's excellent comments, if you decide to go with paint rather that powder coat, use epoxy primer under the paint. Good luck...Al English

No finish will stand up to mechanical abrasion forever. The design sounds faulty.

The finishes that best resist chipping are polyurethane, epoxy, and powder coat. Any existing rust will have to be removed before using any of these products.

Check around at a local body shop or two and get some specific product recommendations.

I had a black car where I could spray the lower areas with a spray can of black automotive undercoating. While I could not prove if it worked, it seemed to slow the rusting and since it was a tar like substance, it didn't easily chip.

I suspect it was better than nothing, was inexpensive and very easy to apply.

It actually looked decent too.
