I went to the hardware store and bought 20 concrete screws. These are the type that make their own threads. I also bought a 3/16 carbide bit. I was installing a new transition threshold in my basement floor. I drilled the special hardwood threshold and countersunk the holes perfectly for a neat job. I drilled the required 20 holes in the concrete and then tried to install the threshold. As my luck would have it, the NEW carbide bit checked to be .198. The bit was stamped 3/16 and should have been .187. Guess where it was made?----- CHINA----

Hilti makes a two part epoxy that you could apply to the bolts also.It goes into a caulking gun.Once it dries it really strong.

I heard a good one on the radio this morning. The comedian said "the future is just a bunch of crap that's broken". I read an interesting piece maybe 6 months ago in Detroit Free Press. A guy, former manager at a specialty bolt plant (rod bolts etc)had just bought the plant that the "national" owners shut down 2 or 3 years previous. They had bought it from the aging family and could not make money with it. Guess what? He is making good money and paying workers very good wages, just like the family was before they retired and sold . Why because he doesn't have the corporate greedy board of ceo's etc. The reason it can't be done in China is its too heavy to ship bulk bolts. I could go on.

I read the same article. The new owners did not want to invest any money in the business. They just wanted to loot the business, sell off the assets, and shut it down. The automotive fasteners they make are pretty critical. The metalalurgy and manufacturing have to be spot on. You don't want soft rod bolts or head bolts.

I went to 1/4 screws. I had to drill the threshold for 1/4 screws. It doesn't look as good but it works.

Yes the Asian imports are here to stay but their cheapness will not... when the price of fuel goes up again( and it will) it will again be cheaper to produce products closer to their area of consumption....but by then we will have to re-develop our manufacturing base because much of our equipment/plants have been sold off to pacific rim countrys and whole manufacturing facilities moved overseas...so the equipment no longer exests on this continent, and it will not be cheap to replace...my 2c Shawn

Yeah, but another scarey thing is that the Japanese will some day own most of the auto factories in this country and it is coming sooner than you think. Then they can dictate how things will run. Most of the cities where their factories are located bent over backwards to give them free land, training etc.

My 2 cents worth is as long as Americans keep buying that junk they will keep making it. I work at a tsc store where we sell that china junk today and it is returned tomorrow. Bottom line is if we stop buying they will stop making it.

I don't know if it will ever stop, but more and more stuff is being built in low wage countries. The CEO of American Axle recently stated that the labor costs in China were 2% of the labor costs in the US. I don't care whether you are union or nonunion, nobody can compete with that. I recently looked at a "quickhitch" sold by Harbor freight. $69 - I couldn't even buy the matierals for that. And thier quality is getting better all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if virtually any tool or vehicle has chinese parts in them now.

Darn right.
If they had the foresight to convince American workers to keep at it ten hours a day six days a week for twenty five cents an hour we'd show them Chinese for sure.

more like why would the union think we would do billions of $$ with a communist country? Our sworn mortal enemy? I cannot believe it myself, then add in cheap ceo that are after one thing and one thing only, the bottom line.
On flipside can't wait for some of them chinese to get smarter so they can take the co jobs for pennies instead of millions
Face it ,we are a service economy and that will be it.
Can't wait for a wwiii and see where the weapons and equipment will be made and sold from. LOL

Unfortnitly guys the chinness are here to stay. Their is enough people buying from them now and they will do what their customers want. It's only a matter of time before they get their quality in line and we will all be sitting in the unemplyment lines, unless we do something about it. What something is I don't know yet. Just my two cents.

I hate to agree, but they are here to stay and the quality is getting better. What happens now, I have been through two plant moves. One to Canada, the other to Mexico. The plant I am in now, same company, has had no pay increases in four years. I used to just play with my own tractors, but have had to start working on other peoples to make it all meet in the middle. The ranks of the middle class people will coctinue to shrink.

Don't get me started on junk from China... Almost all of my customers (I am in the Tool& Die business) are now buying their molds from China..Nothing but junk, but they want the local shops to try to fix them.. They cannot understand that you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.. I try my best not to buy anything from China.. nothing but a bunch of Commies, selling junk and destroying our industries..

I am in the Tool and Die business also and I"ll tell you one you will like. We do metal stamping as well and started running some aluminum tubes with slots in them for A/C condensers. After getting the bugs worked out on the job the customer decided they could get them built cheaper in China. Well they did, of course the parts were not right but they got them built cheaper.

Sent them back to us to run because they couldn"t get a good part from China. Somethings just make ya laugh.....LOL!!!!
