O.T. Propane conversion for generator.

I have an 8kw Dayton generator with an Onan engine. I recently accquired an 18 H.P. Briggs V-twin engine. I would like to know about converting this model to use low pressure L.P and Natural gas with one of the dual fuel kits and eleminate the problems of gasoline fuel system that is not used often enough to keep it from getting gummy in the carburetor and tank. Any one ever converted one of the v-twin engines before?

I have converted several generators over to propane.
My advice is don't use a spud in kit. Get a propane carb for the onan. I don't know if they make one for the Briggs. Check with your propane supplier. If they are anything like mine they can and will get you the parts. Install the regulator so the diaphram is vertical and not horizontal, you don't want gravity helping it move.
Just in case you don't already know; when you switch from gas to propane you will loose 15 percent of your power output from the engine.
Also another thing I learned the hard way is you have to be careful of the oil you use. In an air cooled propane engine you have to use an ashless oil, the ash will build up as coke on the valves and cause them to wear and burn. Chevron Delo 400 is a good oil to use in this application.
Another thing to remember is when you install all the new parts and start adjusting in the carb make your final high speed adjustment with a hertz or cycle meter not a tach. Set it at 62 cycles with no load.

I run a Miller Bobcat with a Kohler twin cylinder on propane. Works great. Check out propane-generators.com. They have several conversion kits, may have one for yours. They send you a box full of strange stuff, but it all has a purpose and makes sense if you read the instructions. They also have a help line with an actual techie type if you get stumped.

I have a 100 lb propane tank on the trailer with the welder. There's a tee between the 2 regulators so the machine can also run off the 500 gal. tank since the rig is also emergency power for the home.
