ice dispenser frosting up

We've had this Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator/freezer for about 15 months. Lately the ice dispenser chute in the door has been frosting up to the point where chunks of ice being dispensed are getting hung up in the frost. Assuming that proper air flow was getting blocked we remove items so that each shelf/drawer had space above. That did not solve the problem, though it seemed to help a little. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem might be? Thanks in advance.

My refrigerator did the same thing. It was caused by the little door not closing all the way. Clear out the frost and make sure the flap closes tightly. That should take care of it.
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

All of the advice so far is right on but some fridges have a small heater in the ice unit that comes on when it goes into defrost. It clears the drop shut of any ice. If it is bad you will also get what you have told us. Defrost timer can cause a whole bunch of problems! If you have kids and they do not shut the door correctly it will do it too. Bad door gasket also. You should see the problems on commercial stuff! Good Lord what idiots can do. Also empty the drip pan under your fridge. If it is dry I would bet you don't have a defrost working! Jeffcat

Jeff, I'm pretty sure all the side by sides have a heater in there. The side by sides are also the most troublesome, but wouldn't trade mine for a new one of the rest.

Defrost time/Bad gasket/bad fan/bad heater/bad terminator. All possibly culprits.

I had one that kept on frosting up and it was the seal on the ice door that was bad.

Side by sides have a defrost timer. My bet is that it's stuck, or not working at all. If you give me the model #, I think I can tell you where it is. Or else go to an appliance part store online and look at the diagram. Mine is behind the kick plate in the front. Once you find it, rotate it until it clicks, then rotate it again until just before it clicks. Then see what happens.

Be sure the ice dispenser little shoot door is closing all the way. If it get's stuck open it will allow outside air to get inside and cause your problem.
