A neighbor has gotten a hold of a infloor hoist out of an old gas station, it is supposed to be air over hydraulic. he has in the ground and is trying to get it to work. the ingroung cyclinder has two pipes, one on the bottom and one at the top. he has put air too the bottom pipe and gets oil out of the top pipe, then he hooked air to the top pipe and gets oil out of the bottom pipe.the lift does not move. any and all information on how this should be hooked up will be welcomed Thanks Jer

what you have is a semmy hydrulic pipe at bottom is one half inch. If you pull plug in center of piston you will see a pipe with brass top. unscrew brass top [1/4 pipe]don,t drop it. Install 1/4 pipe cap and add air to 1/2 pipe see if holds pressure? this lift has a habbit of cracking 1/4 pipe at base. They do make a vegatable oil for lifts.

You might check with your friendly local Dept of enviromental restrictions to see if you'll get in hot water by installing one of these type hoists. As I'm told in Pa at least, these are no longer allowed due to oil leakage underground. Most in this area have been pulled out and if replaced, replacements are the above ground units.

Thanks Guys, I'll give him the information. sounds like he may have a bad seal the hoist I found out later layed on it side for a year. just pushes oil out the top pipe. lift won't lift or move. anyway Thanks for the information Jer

You might try this. Cap or plug one of the pipes you mentioned and connect your air to second pipe and see what happens. Iremember there usually was a capped pipe sticking out of the concrete.Good luck.

You�re right, there is a capped pipe next to cylinder. If I remember correctly (been 30 years), that is the oil fill. For sure he needs to cap one of the pipes off. If not, the air pressure will just move oil out the other pipe and not pressure the oil to move the cylinder.

Never messed with an inground lift but every one I've ever seen is nothing more than a basic single acting cylinder with a positive safety stop built in. You put pressure to the bottom side and it lifts, you bleed that pressure off and it drops. That said, based on what your describing, the seal on the cylinder is shot. If you put pressure to the top end then you'd most likely have fluid coming out the bottom, because the seal wouldn't be sealing that direction, unless someone had put a double acting seal in in it which really wouldn't be a good thing because it would tend to wipe the lubrication off the cylinder walls as the cylinder extended leaving the seal to run more or less "dry". Putting pressure to the bottom should have resulted in the cylinder extending with VERY little leakage to the top side. Now in use a cylinder like your talking about probably had a certain amount of leakage "engineered in" to provide lubrication for the rod. If it were old enough to have been made with leather seals then you can bet it'd leak by a little bit, "engineered in" or not. That said that small amount of seal leakage is the likely reason for a vent tube that can be piped to allow the oil that bypassed the seal to return to the tank or whatever, and not hit the shop floor creating a slick mess. With that said if your putting pressure to the bottom and getting a flow out the top without the cylinder moving then, again, you've got a bad seal. Hope this helps. The in floor hoist that I have had experience with has a tank in the ground that is filled with oil. The air comes from the air source to a two way valve, from the two way valve, air enters the oil tank, air forces the oil from the oil tank into the bottom of the cylinder. When the valve is actuated the other direction the air is expelled from the tank and allows the oil to return. Works that simple.

We bought one out of a closed Gulf station. Ours used air pressure over hydraulic to lift and bled the air pressure to lower.

DMont explained it correctly. Two way air valve. There should only be one location where your air supply connects to lift. On our valve, one side let in compressor air and the other side exhausted air in the lift to lower it. We even had a muffler on exhaust side to quiet it down while lowering lift. Oh, and it takes a faily high capacity compressor tank to run that thing.

Air goes in the only pipe, and comes right back out the same pipe. Of course that is if it looks like the rough sketch above. I have two like this in my shop that have been in my family and in constant use for 50 years. They are awesome.
