Bar and Chain Oil question...

I've noticed that chainsaw bar and chain oil seems to be the same consistency as Lucas Oil Additive. Is there a chemical difference between these two products?

Could it be that the Lucas additive -- which I really like -- is nothing more than B&C oil?!?

I've been using used motor oil in all my saws for 40 years now - without any problems. All the old oil is either 10W-40 or 15W-40. In fact, I've never bought a new bar in my life and never worn one out. I've never bought bar-oil either. I worked for a Stihl and Homelite dealer back late 60s and still have many bars that were thrown out at that time - as being bad. Usually, a chain gets sharpened wrong, chain cuts cockeyed, and the bar gets blamed. Just about all the bars I've ever seen that were ruined - were caused by bad sharpening - or forcing the bar with a dull chain. Anyway just my two cents. I used to work the power-company tree cutting crew and also was a foreman at Asplundh Tree Expert Co. - back when all we used were Homelite saws with manual oilers. I still have several Stihls from the 60s with original bars - and I cut a lot of hardwood - mostly sugar maple and red oak. S10, 040, and O8S Stihl saws still run great - but are kind of heavy.

I've done just that for years. Lucas and whatever I have laying around. A ways back I got a gallon of Husky bar oil and will never go back.
It dosent seem to make as much mess and it's biodegradable. Seems cheaper than mixing my own concoction too. My local Sthil dealer has a safflower bar oil that worked OK for me also.

I think you are on the right track. Lucas's additive claims to "cling", which seems awful similar to the "tack" additive used in bar and chain oils. If I were to guess I would think the Lucas oil is merely a "tack" additive. My 3K old Mobil1 10w-30 seems to throw off the bar much worse than the bar and chain oil.

My manufacturer recommended common non-detergent 30 weight motor oil for chain lube.

As far as bar/chain oil I have used 10w-40 when I didnt have bar/chain oil, works fine. I also at times take and dump oil right on the bar, a few tablespoons, IMO lube is lube to a point.

I've been to a place that sells oil to bar/chain lube repackagers. They dump out the bottoms of the 55 gallon drums, there always seems to be a quart or two left. Doesn't matter if it's 5w30, 15w40 or hydraulic oil. It all gets put into one barrel and sent to the packager. Don't tell that to the guys buying the expensive Stihl or whatever bar oil.
